Kiva is on a mission to expand financial access to help underserved communities thrive.

About us

Kiva (www.kiva.org) expands financial access to help underserved communities thrive. An international non-profit, we serve the financially excluded, especially underbanked women, refugees and communities impacted by forced displacement, climate-vulnerable people and systemically marginalized communities in the United States. By connecting people through crowdfunded loans, Kiva puts the power of financial inclusion in all our hands. Since 2005, the Kiva community has raised over $2 billion in loans, reaching over 5 million people in 84 countries. Kiva’s team is made up of 100+ employees and 450+ volunteers across the world, with offices in San Francisco, Nairobi, Bangkok, and Bogotá.

Small business owners from all backgrounds should get the support they need. Why? Because everyone deserves the opportunity to pursue their dreams and improve their livelihoods. Kiva facilitates access to capital, helping US small business owners reach their goals. But finance alone is rarely enough. We want to understand how AI tools are supporting small business growth in the US, too. Here’s a tip about using ChatGPT for business. What to include in your ChatGPT prompts: • 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮: Specify ChatGPTʼs role or ask it to adopt a persona. For example, “You are a seasoned marketing executive.” • 𝗧𝗮𝘀𝗸: Make sure itʼs clear what you want ChatGPT to do. For example, “For each attached 2 picture of baked goods, provide a written description.ˮ • 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁: Include relevant background information. For example, “The descriptions will be used for the digital menu of a bakery in Michigan.ˮ • 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁: Specify the response format, like whether itʼs an email or a report, and how long it needs 4 to be. For example, “Each description should be 100 words.ˮ …..and donʼt stop with one answer! AI works best when you give feedback and ask for specific changes. Kiva and OpenAI have teamed up to bring more helpful ChatGPT tips to small business owners. Click the link in our comments to explore them.

Expanding financial inclusion for underserved communities is our mission. What is financial inclusion? Let’s break it down: 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘭𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯? Not everyone has access to financial services like bank accounts, credit, and access to loans. And often, this lack of access is correlated with poverty and systemic inequality. Over 1.4 billion people worldwide—more than 31 percent of adults—are considered “unbanked”. 𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘶𝘯𝘣𝘢𝘯𝘬𝘦𝘥? This can be for a variety of reasons, including gender inequality, lack of access to a mobile phone or internet service, lack of access to government IDs, or even systemic or structural factors like unstable governments, conflicts, refugee status, or racism, among other reasons. 𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘭𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴: Everyone deserves a chance to provide for themselves and fulfill their dreams. Marginalized entrepreneurs face financial discrimination and have unequal access to the financial services they need to thrive. 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘐 𝘥𝘰 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘪𝘵? At Kiva, we connect lenders to borrowers worldwide. Through crowdfunded loans, Kiva supports women, refugees, climate-threatened people, and marginalized entrepreneurs with the financial access they need to thrive. Social enterprises are creating innovative solutions that mitigate the effects of climate change and directly support the populations most impacted by it. But, the World Economic Forum estimates that social enterprises like these face a $1.1 trillion dollar funding gap. Non-traditional funding models, like crowdfunding, can help. Kiva’s CEO Vishal Ghotge shared key examples of this with Fast Company: • The social enterprise Someone Somewhere in Mexico transforms traditional crafts into modern, eco-friendly apparel and accessories. Despite its 36-fold growth in three years, Someone Somewhere faced hurdles in accessing the capital required to expand its operations. It turned to a nontraditional model—crowdfunding— successfully raising a $100,000 USD loan from 2,874 people on Kiva.org. • Kuli Kuli Foods is a woman-founded social enterprise creating a global market for moringa, a drought-resistant tree known for its nutritional benefits. In 2015, Kuli Kuli crowdfunded capital, raising $10,000 in 2015 through Kiva.org. And in 2020, it worked with Kiva to raise a $100,000 loan, crowdfunded by 2,849 individuals and several organizations. • ATEC Global is a social enterprise that’s developed highly efficient electric induction stoves that eliminate harmful kitchen emissions and significantly reduce energy costs for families. Since 2021, ATEC has relied on crowdfunded loans to both finance cookstoves and to expand. This approach led ATEC to recently close a $3.75 million Series A funding. Social enterprises are key players driving innovative solutions to climate change. Yet, for these mission-driven ventures to scale, they need more than just support—they need funding. Kiva.org is one path to securing capital, but it can’t be the only one. It’s time for investors to rethink how they fund climate solutions. Click the link in the comments to read the full article.

“Every time a refugee gets a job, the world is a better place.” - Hamdi Ulukaya m, Chobani Founder and CEO, and Founder of Tent Partnership for Refugees, talking about the importance of prioritizing refugees at Clinton Global Initiative with Emerson Collective. I would go one step further to say that every time a refugee starts a business it positively impacts a community and the world. 🌎 🌍 Kiva has proved that lending to refugees is not risky! In fact, repayment rates often exceed the standard repayment rate where they are. Thanks for bringing the refugee story to the stage at #cgi2024 Katie Couric. Reach out if you want to invest in refugees today. 🗺️
