Tackling the effects of #climatechange on #mentalhealth : a concrete answer. 😔 On mental health as well, climate change is disproportionately affecting the more vulnerable communities. A Global Research and Action Agenda, released this summer by Climate Cares - Imperial College London, identifies research priorities and recommendations to understand and act on the #mentalhealth impacts of the #climate crisis. 🌍 The priorities are connected to and informed by the expertise of over 960 people from 90 countries, including across research, policy, practice and lived experience. 👍Supported by the Wellcome Trust, the project is led by Dr Emma Lawrance, lead of the Climate Cares Centre, and an AXA Research Fund post doc Fellow on climate change impact on health. Should climate change keep you from having kids? 👶 In their provocative new book, "The Conceivable Future: Planning Families and Taking Action in the Age of Climate Change," authors @MeghanKallman and @JosephineFerorelli explore how people are thinking about family planning in a time of increasing uncertainty. 📖 Next week you'll be able to get your hands on this must-read for all ages and genders, whether you're considering parenting but are held back by #climateanxiety, you know parenting is not for you, or you're past childbearing years but always considering what it means to be human in a changing world. In the meantime, check out this @YaleClimateConnections Q&A with the authors for what was, to me, an eye- and heart-opening discussion on all of the above — plus their hot take on the dark side of population control as a climate solution, and their novel framework for how people with different mindsets (ie are you a yes person or a no person?) can help #stopglobalwarming. #conceivablefuture #climateispersonal #greatreads --->

The rise of eco-anxiety There is growing evidence that climate change worsens mental health in multiple ways. These include the trauma and distress caused directly by extreme weather and a more general ‘eco-anxiety’: a chronic fear of environmental doom. Negative news about the climate crisis — along with inaction by world leaders — is itself a source of eco-anxiety and frustration. More than 55% of young people in a global 2021 survey said that climate change made them feel powerless, and 58% felt betrayed by their government. On the flip side, studies suggest that individuals who take action to combat climate change can also help to curb their eco-anxiety: a double win. https://lnkd.in/dg92tHX4

Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay🧠 Our Climate Cares team has been at the forefront of the growing #ClimateChange and #MentalHealth field for few years, working across research, policy, education, and intervention design. While this field is rapidly growing, it remains disconnected, unequal, and siloed. The Wellcome Trust-funded #ConnectingClimateMinds project is countering these challenges to build an inclusive climate and mental health field. Check out the Global Research and Action Agenda that we have recently developed, to set out clear priorities for understanding and acting on the #MentalHealth impacts of the #ClimateCrisis👇 https://lnkd.in/emmmpJHr Grantham Institute - Climate Change and the Environment #ClimateAnxiety #Climate #MentalHealthDay

🌎 💚 The most important thing we can do about #climatechange has nothing to do with our #carbonfootprint -- it's as simple as talking about it -- especially with our kids, families, and community. When we start talking about it and using our voices to advocate for change wherever we live or work, with our kids, families, and communities, that's when we can make a big difference. 🌎 💚 When it comes to our kids, the reality is, they're already experiencing climate change -- so let's empower them instead of overwhelming them. 💚 I share some practical tips and a script to use to talk to your kids about climate change with hope instead of fear (developed by Katharine Hayhoe and the The Nature Conservancy for the Aspen Ideas Climate Planet Media initiative). 👩👧 This story was part of a partnership between The Cool Down and Rebel Girls -- I'm a huge fan girl of their empowering brand so when Jes Wolfe asked me to collaborate on some #EarthDay content for moms and girls, I jumped at the chance! 💡 I also had the opportunity to pull in wisdom from Anya Kamenetz at the Climate Mental Health Network, Anthony Leiserowitz at the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication as well as showcase the popular new digital series for tweens #ThisisCooler from Encantos, ✨Susie Jaramillo, and the The Aspen Institute team (nearly 4M views on YouTube in just days!). Read my story here: https://lnkd.in/gXiAkEXv Thanks Laura Schifter and Gary Knell for making some of these connections and amplifying the need to educate and engage our youth! #happyearthday #sustainability #climatechange #climatecrisis #climate #climatehope

Hej allesammen! Let’s talk grøn! 🌱 Today, we are going to discuss this common misconception together! Climate change isn't some distant #threat reserved for our grandchildren—it's impacting us right NOW. 🚨 From extreme #weather events to rising #sealevels, the evidence is all around us. According to this study from King's College London, #climatechange is already causing significant #disruptions in our lives, with immediate consequences ranging from #economic costs to loss of #biodiversity. It's not just about future generations - it's about us. And this research underscores the urgency of our collective action. 🤝🌎 Let's not leave the burden of climate change to our #future generations. It's time to act now, so they don't inherit the #consequences of our inaction. 💪🌱 The Common OnesThe Policy Institute King's College London Klimate.co Sustainify People of 2050 #climateactionnow #immediateimpact #sustainability #greenfuture #beresponsible

While stakeholders are increasingly taking an interest in the intersection of climate and health, it is still a relatively misunderstood and fragmented field. Climate change is a global health challenge that must be acted on with high-impact solutions, transparency, and coordinated efforts. 🌲 Severe wildfire seasons are becoming one of the greatest climate risks facing B.C., with far-reaching implications for air quality, mental health, and emergency management. 🔥 The Lancet Planetary Health (with authors Courtney Howard and Sarah B. Henderson, PhD) recently published an article titled "Seasons of Smoke and Fire: Preparing Health Systems for Improved Performance Before, During, and After Wildfires." It provides practical guidance for leaders and health professionals navigating these challenges and emphasizes the need for breaking down silos. Now, more than ever, collaboration across disciplines is crucial to proactively planning for and funding innovation and coordination to address health impacts of a changing climate. At SHIFT Collaborative, we are deeply committed to addressing these critical intersections of climate change and health. Our work focuses on creating resilient systems that can adapt to the increasing pressures of our changing environment. 🔗 Read the full article here: Seasons of Smoke and Fire - The Lancet Planetary Health https://lnkd.in/ehCpwbra #ClimateChange #HealthSystems #WildfirePreparedness #BCWildfires

Climate breakdown is one of the greatest threats to global public health. Extreme heat, sea-level rise, and poor air quality are just some of the climate impacts that pose health risks, especially for historically under-invested communities and marginalized populations. To explore the intersection of climate change and health equity, Florida State University@Florida State University and Rutgers University–New Brunswick are hosting a series of webinars that will bring together practitioners and community leaders to share their experiences and insights on building resilient and sustainable communities that prioritize health and equity in the face of climate change. Each session will focus on a different aspect of climate adaptation, highlighting real-world examples and strategies from those working directly in their communities, and I’m so pleased that @RWJF provided support for this work. ☀ 🔥 The first webinar in the series, taking place on August 27, will focus on community-led efforts to address extreme heat and promote health equity. Local leaders and activists will share about developing and implementing heat resilience strategies tailored to their community's unique needs. Register here: https://lnkd.in/d2DUm-vi #Climate #ExtremeHeat #HealthEquity
