Societies are aging, increasing demand for healthcare services, and bringing budgetary pressures on the public and private sectors. 25% of the world’s population is age 60 or older, and roughly 40% of US physicians are 55 or older. Health spending per person accelerates after 60 in eight major developed countries, while aging tends to dampen the productivity growth that can help finance that spending. Today, we released the final installment of our Industry Impact Report. These never-before-collected insights highlight the pivotal role acute care children's hospitals play in meeting children's unique health care needs and the challenges these specialized facilities face. According to the report, more than three fourths of these hospitals treat over 10,000 patients annually for urgent care and are active in their communities addressing social barriers that impact children's health. The U.S. spends twice as much on our health care per person than any other developed nation, yet our health outcomes remain behind those of our peers. Political leaders and industry experts alike have made limited progress in transforming our health care system to one that better prioritizes patient health. Despite ample research showing that high-quality primary care is associated with better patient outcomes and a reduction in overall health care costs, the U.S. continues to underinvest in and under-prioritize primary care.
