Students applying for jobs/internships right now — My student applied for a job and didn’t check the company LinkedIn prior. There were FIVE alumni at the company, some doing exactly what she wanted to be doing. **BEFORE YOU APPLY TO ANY JOB: 1. Go to the company page on LinkedIn -> Click People. 2. Filter these people by your school, *neighboring schools, your major, + the primary keywords/roles that interest you. **You're looking for someone who has experience that genuinely interests you AND/OR something in common with you. 3. Pick 2 of these people > Click connect > add a note > ask for a 15 minute conversation (template below). 4. Go into that conversation with 4-5 questions prepared about pieces of their experience / the industry that would be genuinely interesting/helpful for you to hear more about about — What got them interested in X after studying [major]? What did the Y role typically involve on a week-to-week basis? What brought them to [company]? Are there any systems, softwares, topics you could familiarize yourself with to make yourself a more valuable entry-level candidate? **Even if there is no referral at the end of this, you should still come out with valuable insights and next steps you can take. 6. At the END of that conversation, thank them for their time, mention that you plan to apply to the X role posted on their site, and ask if they have any tips or suggestions for the application and interview process — At the least, you should get some insider tips. Company don't want to train anymore especially for junior or intern roles, what you do is go get that training by volunteering your services to different projects that resonate with you or start your own simple one. Don't just sit and wait, time is moving leaving a gap in your resume. Try help them achieve their goals, add it to your resume + now you even have something to talk about your experience during an interview and what they ask tell me about yourself.
