The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute reports that sickle cell disease (SCD) affects more than 100,000 Americans and 20 million people worldwide. SCD isa group of inherited red blood cells that become sticky and form a C-shaped tool called a “sickle”. This can become problematic with a shortage of red blood cells, which are essential to help carry oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body.
