This year marks the 25th anniversary of the United Nations Security Council’s adoption of the protection of civilians (POC) in armed conflict agenda. However, a widening gap between legal obligations and practice now threatens 25 years of progress and leaves civilians in conflicts around the world vulnerable to the devastating consequences of these wars. During tomorrow's #UNSC Open Debate, we urge Member States, Council Members, and António Guterres to inject renewed urgency into ensuring the implementation of international laws and standards. 📺 Tune into the debate here: https://lnkd.in/dHXBgR9y #POCWeek2024 #NotATarget

The Four Geneva Conventions, signed on August 12, 1949, are cornerstone treaties in international humanitarian law (IHL), governing the conduct of armed conflicts and the protection of those affected. Despite their significance, the application of IHL faces challenges, particularly in non-international conflicts, hybrid warfare, and with the evolution of advanced weaponry and cyber warfare. These challenges highlight the need for continuous updates and stronger enforcement mechanisms. Nevertheless, the Conventions remain pivotal in safeguarding human rights and upholding the principle of humanity during war. #GenevaConventions #InternationalHumanitarianLaw #HumanRights #LawOfWar #ProtectionOfCivilians

Ahead of #InternationalMineAwarenessDay, our message at the 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council side event: "There is a clear and logical connection between state duties to protect human rights and the provisions in the Mine Ban Treaty and the Convention on Cluster Munitions focusing on human security. A mine-free world isn't just about disarmament; it's about affirming the right to life, health, and safety. States have a critical role and responsibility in translating these conventions' provisions into actions that safeguard their citizens against the remnants of armed conflicts." #MineFreeWorld #HumanitarianDisarmament #ICBLCMC #UNHRC55

Isn't it time to bring democracy, equal rights and END dictatorship in UN? Ending dictatorship within the UN system is crucial for upholding the principles of sovereignty and self-determination for all nations. By championing democracy, equal rights, and rejecting dictatorship, the UN can fulfill its mandate to create a more just and peaceful world for all.

In cases where UN Security Council fails to take effective measures, we have to provide harmed specific countries or the international community as a whole, with an applicable option, to protect freedom of navigation. Peace and security at high seas, and in other maritime zones, when the coastal state/s fail to take necessary measures, are vital for overall - global peace and security. Not only the concept of "self-defence", but also, the concept of "self-help" in public international law should always be kept in mind: https://lnkd.in/dkX93th2
