In very exciting news, I'm hiring the City & County of SF's 4th Chief Data Officer. This role leads the DataSF team (6 engineers, data scientists, & program folks), the SF open data program, & citywide data sharing & practice. https://lnkd.in/ggmj67Ve The CDO reports directly to me, & DataSF is part of our 48-person Digital & Data Services team in the City Administrator's office. We're a friendly & diverse team with people from many professional backgrounds. CAO is a general, but very forward-thinking office led by the excellent Carmen Chu (don't approach her about this please! just telling you I love working for her). It's a great place to form partnerships, & DataSF works with many permitting, safety, & critical services departments as well as the Dept of Technology, Controller's Office, & Mayor's Office of Innovation. Couple things you should know: - this is a hybrid job that requires one day per week in-office in downtown SF. Sorry we can’t do remote, but it’s for a pretty cool reason - SF deputizes all City employees as disaster service workers in case of an earthquake/etc. So you need to be near. - from the posting, you need to meet the minimum qualifications (5 years managing programs with data & 3 years managing professional staff) but you don’t need to meet all of the desired qualifications - though of course if you do, tell us! In applying for govt jobs, it’s worth taking a minute to make sure your resume & cover letter respond directly to the parts of the job description you meet. We don’t use AI reviews, but we do have non-technical HR folks. So please, spell out your management exp, for example. If you have broad data experience, some of it technical, policy chops, an informed perspective on AI & emerging tech, ability to present & influence at an exec level & are a great, caring manager & senior peer, we'd love to see your application!

The other day I saw this post from Zach Wilson asking when is this "Senior-Only Job Market" is going to end. I replied with my thoughts in his post but wanted to share with you as well. What is the "Senior-Only Job Market"? Its the fact that when companies recruit for some "entry-level" jobs now, they are asking for unattainable curriculas from applicants with no experience looking to enter the market. And like I replied on Zach´s post, the worst part is that I believe the seniors-only market has just started. AI has been disrupting jobs for some time now, and as we have seen, it has the potential to cover for several junior functions such as: - drafting summaries, - writing articles, emails - basic coding, basic data wrangling - and pretty much every task that doesn't require much specialization. Then, to contextualize and make the outputs work & useful companies will need mostly specialized/experienced talent. This means that I believe the most impacted jobs in the medium and long term by Artificial Intelligence disruptions will be the junior ones, setting up an entry barrier for new talents to enter the "formal" job market. Another great hire worth mentioning: 1️⃣ An Architect level Data Engineering role with a truly complex mix of tools and heavy security requirements related to data 2️⃣ Our new teammate will deliver for the US-based customer from Poland 🇵🇱 3️⃣ The goal is to conduct an assessment of the customer's current BI solutions and re-architect it the way it is more robust, scaleable and cheaper to maintain Not an easy catch for any hiring team especially in that short timespan 😂

How do you suggest we tackle this situation Zach Wilson ? There are rarely any junior positions and even if there are they will require 5+ years of experience. I know building projects would help but how will I compare with the experienced individuals? A request to recruiters, to please reconsider our experience when reaching out to us, because it only results in heartbreak if we don’t have the experience you expect and as international students, our time is ticking. #dataengineering
