In an era of census-based data and AI it’s amazing that a single household can have such adverse effect on the ‘defacto’ ratings system for Television. As a long-time advocate, huge props to Donna Speciale for standing firm on the measurement “anomalies” she experienced at TelevisaUnivision. Although Nielsen’s new fused ‘panel + big data’ is a promising move its unlikely to make up for all the damage caused by their panel-only ratings. Back in my Cablevision days we had more networks on our dial than people meters to measure them…so it didn’t take a data scientist to recognize there were fundamental flaws. It’s just dissapointing it’s taken (us) so long to address the underlying problem. I guess one piece of good news is that TV is throwing off far more ‘impressions’ than what conventional ratings would lead you to believe. Just ask any of the alternative impressions-based currencies and you’ll see a much fuller picture of TV (when measured on an impression basis).
