Bad Robot Games’ Post

Can you imagine a period in time when there aren't multiple game consoles? I personally would find it exciting to have a single platform besides PC that could play console games from all the major companies like Sony and Microsoft. As we get further into console development, they really aren't all that different. Wouldn't it make sense to do a combined effort of a single console than multiple expensive consoles that just don't sell nearly as well as their predecessors? Sure. I get why you wouldn't want that in a business perspective due to monopolizing the market, but companies make more money out of games than consoles.

I’m the weirdo in the room, that would be incredibly boring imo. The ecosystems of the 4 key platforms, Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, and PC/Steam are all quite different. Each offer different things, that variety is Blending them together imo would ruin many things that each do well. More options is always better. I want to keep getting my gimmicky Nintendo consoles, with exclusives polished to drive that platform into its own unique market. Throw nintendo onto other places and 80% of those smaller IP’s die with their purpose to sell a Nintendo platform gone. I want to keep getting Pikmin andWarioWare! I want my PlayStation for its own reasons of higher end performance and long running exclusive IP’s, and controller quality. I want my Xbox for the convinces of trying new things with cheap gamepass. I want my PC for development and modding side of games I can’t get on my console. I understand why some people want everything on one box, but that sounds as boring of a future as if we all drove the same car or had the same brand and model of phone.

I keep thinking about this GameDiscoverCo post on how the vast catalog of Steam games – so many of which are still playable and polished – means that new games are competing with *all games*. It used to be that constant hardware and OS changes meant older games were harder to play, and perhaps not worth playing. Now that things are more stable and it's easy to distribute bug fixes and updates online, that's all changed. And it's happening to consoles, too... https://lnkd.in/egn-Hfu9
