The question of how much training should be done in a simulator and how much should be live flying is different for every individual pilot, every air force and every type of aircraft. That is why we are working alongside training technology experts VRAI to compare the data from sorties flown by pilots in our advanced jet trainer, Hawk, with that from simulator training. This analysis of objective data will allow us to accurately explore which type of training delivers the most benefit, enabling us to tailor training to deliver even more highly-skilled pilots quicker. Another welcome step to bring objectivity to a predominantly subjective issue. Many diverse factors to consider, however.

The Pucker Factor: Technology for flight simulators has come a long way. What are the risks versus the rewards of moving aviation training towards simulators? I remember being a healthy skeptic when much of our training requirements shifted from the aircraft to the simulator. It was more cost-effective and safer to practice emergency procedures. However, I couldn’t help but feel like we were losing a part of aviation that can’t be simulated. I call it the pucker factor: how does one react to stress knowing it’s a simulation versus actually being in the air? My views have considerably changed since then as technology has advanced. But that leaves me with the question of where does one ✍️ the line? Pilot Training Next (PTN) is n Air Force program that aims to improve pilot training by exploring new technologies. The program was launched in 2018 by the Air Education and Training Command in response to a growing pilot shortage. PTN's goal is to produce more pilots in less time and at a lower cost by reimagining how learning is delivered to airmen. What are your thoughts?

Should pilot training be explicit or tacit? From the airlines to business aviation every training is similar because it values and critics failure. All of us can relate to leaving the Simulator with the check airmen criticing the list of failures after checkride, and small remark section on success. Unless we study human behavior and train to raise the expertise of pilots, simply judging and narrow training regimen for all pilots, we will never raise the lever of expertise. Human behavior in cockpit (not attitude towards colleagues, but setting the right brightness, scale, radar, EGPWS) is foremost in determining the safety of a highly automated flight. #PilotSafety #AviationSafety #PilotTraining #FlightTraining #AviationTraining

👩✈️A pilot radio call is a communication between a pilot and an air traffic controller (ATC) that assists in the safe and efficient operation of an aircraft. 📡Do you think you can make better radio calls than our little pilots? #radiocall #pilot #atc #aviation #dkaviation

In Aviation there is a word, “Tumbleweed”, that is used by pilots when they lose SA (Situational Awareness). It could be tactical, but it could escalate to a general sense of lost of direction. What you are told in pilot training, where as a young pilot it’s normal to lack in prioritisation skills, is “back to the basics”, “maintain level flight”, “follow the checklist”. Structure and checklist, my #3 Fighter Pilot’s non negotiable. #fighterpilot #groundinginthesky #maintainlevelflight Read about it on Substack https://lnkd.in/dQg3SvEA
