Architect, Academic & Environmental Activist, Founder at BakerBrown, Climate Literacy Champion University of Brighton. NATURAL MATERIALS, RE-USE, RETROFIT & CLOSE-LOOP SYSTEMS
For many years BakerBrown has offered clients and design teams low carbon, sustainability and circular economy consultancy services in addition to architecture. More recently we have focussed on assisting clients that are interested in radically reducing the embodied carbon footprint of their developments. This takes the form of quantifying the potentials for reusing the previously overlooked, whether that is a whole building or neighbourhood, deconstructing for reuse instead of throwing away, or simply understanding the current and emerging legislation, subsidies, infrastructure and networks that can support an authentic and #JustTransition towards a #CircularEconomy. The team at BakerBrown has produced a series of infographics that try to explain the eight steps we tend to go through in order to "make your new place from your old place". Here it is illustrated below. Co-Founder @ Hiut Denim Co, @ Do Lectures | Be in charge of your time. Work on stuff that matters. Help others.
You learn by listening to those who think differently.
And now for something a little different. Anglepoise's Chairman and chief custodian Simon Terry FRSA has been out and about meeting makers and innovators who inspire him from all sorts of different industries, delving into what it is that sparks their creative fire. Over the coming months we'll be sharing all of these conversations with you but for the first interview, there was only ever one innovator at the top of the list: Sir Kenneth Grange. You can read or watch the conversation unfold here: https://lnkd.in/exEbsFha Enjoy, and if it sparks your interest in his work, as luck would have it 😉 Thames & Hudson have just published 'Kenneth Grange: Designing the Modern World' which explores his life and work at depth.

Arup Associate and Food and Agriculture Systems Business Leader, Eike Sindlinger, talks to AD about Regenerative Design and our new Primer, which he helped to develop and produce. The Primer gives detailed guidance for architectural practices and others on shifting the paradigm from sustainability to regenerative approaches: from mitigating the built environment's negative impacts to delivering one that makes 'positive' the default. “For me, regenerative design is the first time we actually don’t have the separation (between humans and nature) but we kind of treat them as one, and that is very different because that approach in my book is very change positive” You can download the #Primer for FREE from the Architects Declare website: https://lnkd.in/e2gnRSNc Designed and delivered by AD's Steering Group, a team of expert contributors and reviewers, this new, free 43-page guide complements our earlier Practice Guide and other resources. At Dropps, we're continually inspired by leaders in sustainability and innovation. One such visionary is William McDonough, an architect and globally recognized leader in sustainable development and design. McDonough pioneered the concepts of Cradle to Cradle Design, the Circular Economy, and the Circular Carbon Economy, reshaping how we think about sustainable practices. McDonough's journey began with building the first solar-heated house in Ireland and has since evolved into a prolific career dedicated to eco-friendly design. His seminal works, "Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things" and "The Upcycle: Beyond Sustainability–Designing for Abundance," have become foundational texts in the sustainability movement. Much like Dropps, Bill’s mission emphasizes creating products that are not only effective but also environmentally responsible. His dedication to a net-positive future through Cradle to Cradle Design mirrors our commitment to biobased formulations and plastic-free packaging. We are particularly inspired by Bill’s focus on intergenerational design and his efforts to inspire global leaders, corporations, and youth toward sustainable practices. His work exemplifies the kind of innovation and environmental stewardship that drives us at Dropps. Join us in celebrating William McDonough's contributions to a sustainable future and let his vision inspire us all to make more conscious choices for our planet! #Sustainability #Dropps #CradletoCradle #CircularEconomy Want to learn more about Bill’s impact? Founder, The Absurd Architect | B.Arch at CAT, Trivandrum | COA | Currently handling Business Strategy for the Creative World | Working towards leveling up the design clan one week at a time.
"My design concept is sustainability." Guilty as charged. I have witnessed (and even been part of) design juries that start with this phrase. But today you know that sustainability is far from a mere concept. It is an entire school of thought that believes good design gives back to the site, the context and if possible to the people it touches. And then we have such a vast topic be reduced to mere greenwashing. From the rolled eyes and frustrated sighs of those jurors, I ll have to assume that greenwashing trends have been doing their harm for a while now. And here we have simply chosen to address it. "Building a circular economy, a circular design model, isn’t just about recycling, for example. If anything, that’s the last resort. Circularity should, firstly, be about reuse and repurposing – about what stays in circulation." A great roundtable discussion from Mix Interiors on circular design models, and what there is still to learn about ‘closing the loop’. Reuse, repurposing, design for deconstruction, modular materials, avoiding glues and composite materials ... are all mentioned and hugely relevant to flooring specifications ... it's definitely worth a look! #flooring #commercialinteriors #circulareconomy #circulardesign

This concept has been around since the 1960s, but it has gained increasing traction recently as a result of regulations, rising consumer demand for sustainable products, and political pressure.
