As of the drafting of this post, Hurricane Helene is heading toward Mexico and Florida, and people around the world - including our team - are holding their breath with concern and fear for those who may be impacted. Earlier this year, colleagues and friends in Jasper, Alberta, faced forest fires that required the entire community to evacuate, and later return to rebuild amid great losses. We are seeing an increase in climate-related disasters around the world, and we know that not all are impacted equally, but that the most vulnerable among us bear the brunt of these tragedies. We know, too, that in the aftermath, communities rebuild. Businesses (re)hang their shingles. People return home and return to work.  But crises and displacement are traumatic and bring not only the practical challenges, but psychological and emotional challenges, and leaders can have a significant impact on whether their teams simply survive a crisis, or thrive in spite of it. In September 2022, Hurricane Ian devastated our beloved Fort Myers Beach, wiping out 100% of businesses and severely damaging 90% of the structures. But from this destruction, we've embarked on a mission that’s incredibly close to my heart: finding innovative ways to rebuild and revitalize our community. 💡 Recently, we've explored a groundbreaking approach to construction that promises to be faster and more cost-effective. Imagine building a high-quality, 1700 square foot house in a factory using the same materials as traditional on-site construction, and then assembling it on location in just 21 days. A couple of weeks ago, we witnessed this concept in action. In just three and a half hours, four modules were lifted by a crane and assembled into a complete house. The result? A tangible sign of hope, resilience, and a brighter future for our community. This is precisely the kind of situation we've trained for, and it's time to put our skills and dedication to work. Hurricane Helene sounds like an extremely serious threat, with its Category 4 status and 140 mph winds. The potential for a 20-foot storm surge in some areas is particularly alarming. It's clear that the communities in its path will need significant support and assistance in the coming days and weeks. To my fellow greyshirts: We're about to face one of our toughest challenges yet. As we say goodbye to our families and put our regular lives on hold, let's remember why we do this. People are counting on us. Lives are at stake. This is our chance to make a real difference when it matters most. For those deploying to the ground: - Stay safe and look out for each other. - Trust your training and remain adaptable as the situation evolves. - Remember, we're stronger together. The devastation caused by Hurricane Helene over the past few days is almost incomprehensible: the destruction that has claimed lives and ravaged communities across Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and Alabama—leaving over 600 miles of damage in its path—is unprecedented and threatens to have far-reaching impacts on supply chains, water and power access, and so much more. We are fortunate to be in touch with our many colleagues in the affected places who, at present, are safe. And we will maintain close contact with our partners and the communities we work with, especially those struggling to access basic necessities. As the climate crisis intensifies, we will see more and more weather-related catastrophes like this. It is critical that community development organizations like LISC be poised to help rebuild, but also to actively engage in efforts that build resilience. When the news cycle moves on, LISC will remain committed, helping communities recover and foster long-term resilience.

⚠️RESTORATION UPDATE⚠️ Friday, Sept. 27 🕘9 PM EDT Our crews and employees behind the scenes are working around the clock to restore power for our customers impacted by the remnants of Hurricane Helene. As we assess damages safely and as quickly as possible, we are establishing area-wide, or “global,” estimated restoration times when we expect to have power restored for the majority of customers in an area. Some of our customers that are without power can now see an estimated restoration time on the outage map. For those customers in our hardest hit areas, we expect to have all global estimated restoration times established mid-day tomorrow. We’ll continue updating restoration times based on crews’ feedback in the field and the level of damage we’re finding at customers’ properties. As South Louisiana gears up for another hurricane, let’s remember that Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is in play—even if employees aren't saying it out loud. Right now, safety and security top the list. While we batten down the hatches, let’s focus on securing our basics. Once we’re safe, we can start thinking about rebuilding connections and supporting each other’s mental well-being. In tough times, solidarity isn’t just a nice-to-have; it’s essential. Goals: stay safe, look out for one another, and get through this stronger together.

As a fellow Floridian, I understand the devastating impact hurricanes can have, yet the destruction left in the Gulf Coast and other Southeastern states is unimaginable. One factor that made this storm tragically unique from others is the effect it had on cities and towns both on and off the coast-from Tampa to Asheville. While our coastal cities have experienced the dangers of hurricanes, other areas had no way to know what to expect, nor could anyone imagine the scale of Helene’s damage. In a time of so much uncertainty and loss, recovery begins with a focus on safety and support. Small steps and established recovery strategies can offer a sense of security. Rebuilding isn’t just about physical structures, but it’s about coming together as a community and as a region, so we can be prepared and ready for whatever storms lie ahead. Yesterday we flew home through the remnants of Hurricane Helene. Upon arrival in Chicago, a weakening Helene treated me to this stunningly spectacular sunset of pinky purple which eventually gave way to purply bright yellow-orange horizon. As it turns out, Helene means ‘shining light’. Taking in the scene unfolding as we taxied to the gate, the fresh stories and hardships of those in security, crisis, risk and resilience management washed over me. Those who are on the front lines of the worst of the worst, both natural and man-made disaster. It’s not easy work.  These days especially, there is no shortage of the unpredictable and even, the unthinkable. The quirky thing about us humans, although we can see ourselves out of most messes when we put our minds to it, most of us don’t like to think about it until we have to. We are weary and crisis-fatigued. These leaders shine a light on the things that matter, even when it's not so fun to do something. And we're all the better for it. The dancing sunset was a startling reminder even in the aftermath of disaster, there is beauty. We have been closely monitoring the effects of Hurricane Helene across our State and - in particular - western North Carolina. Our hearts are heavy as more details come forth and as we are all absorbing the shock of the deadly and catastrophic impact of Hurricane Helene. Record-level flooding has either decimated communities, or has left them without communications and other basic and essential infrastructure. While emergency responders work to stabilize immediate threats, the gravity of the long road ahead looms large. Right now, we grieve with all the people and communities caught in the wake of this disaster. In the meantime, we will listen and learn where our organization’s assistance is most suited - and we we will act accordingly. We will come back as a State. How long and to what end is unknown.
