ENCOURAGING TALENT INTO CONSTRUCTION This week we are delighted to welcome: Alayna, Andrew, Charlotte, Izabela, and Joseph to our head office from Woking College to enjoy a whole week of work experience. During the week the students will experience: Estimating, Site Management, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Bid Management and Document Control, so that they will have a truly exciting, immersive and rounded experience working within the construction industry. MCS recognises that there is a shortage of labour in the construction industry, which is likely to remain, until we as a market sector, raise students' awareness of the huge range of exciting career opportunities which exist within the sector. A report published by the CITB sited that the construction industry needs to add more than a quarter of a million workers by 2026 to keep pace with demand. This equates to 53,200 additional workers needed each year, with carpentry and joinery identified as particularly susceptible to recruitment pinch points. Another recent CITB report showed that the overall appeal of the construction industry as a career option for young people is low, scoring 4.2 out of 10 among 14 to 19 year olds. It is perceived to be about 'being outdoors and getting dirty' and most suited to 'young people who do not get into college or university'. We want to change that perception and are passionate about nurturing the talent of tomorrow, so we welcome work experience placements from local schools and also participate at Careers Fairs throughout the South East. Over a quarter of a million. That’s how many extra jobs the UK’s construction industry will have to fill by 2028 to meet demand. Construction is typically seen as an ‘unattractive’ career path, but it’s a great industry to work in with high earning potential and progression opportunities. With it being GCSE results day today, people will naturally be thinking about their future. University is pushed upon you when you leave school. Society looks down on you if you’re not educated to a degree level. Higher education isn’t for everyone though - it certainly wasn’t for me. Yes, a degree might get your foot in the door for some roles. But if you want to work in construction without continuing your academic studies, there’s plenty of routes into the industry. An apprenticeship being one of them! I left school with little qualifications, did an apprenticeship at Doosan Babcock and worked my way up. AMB Recruitment Group is now a multiple eight-figure construction recruitment agency. I built my own path as a professional in the construction sector. With over 250,000 vacancies to fill and a huge talent gap, please keep in mind you can go down the apprenticeship route too. You never know what doors it might open!

College day for me, but what a great day it has been! Today, we had careers fair at MidKent College where I had great conversations with Siemens Energy, Genco Construction Services Limited , CC Cousins, Trinity Claims, Golding Homes, St. Modwen Homes and more! My conversations went from new #housebuilds, #electricalplants at National Grid, #quantitysurveying, #hvac, #surveying, #iosh and #nebosh to #retrofitting. I can’t wait to dive into #surveying and even told one company that I am a RICS student member already. Nick Inge I saw your Itrust logo and mentioned you today. I watched a bit of the process whilst the work for installation of the #groundsourceheatpumps took place on our college campus. I even spoke about taking the #retrofit coordinator course that the college will offer. Then in college we are preparing for our next assignment so I did work on Hooke’s Law (elasticity of materials) and researched how to achieve #fireprotection in a #commercialbuild. I have an exam on fire protection soon. Not to mention, I finally managed to get the car cleaned. Electricians will save the planet. Why ❔❓ Our country is racing to electrify everything, to reduce effects of carbon emissions. We have a slight problem 👇 We need 250,000 electricians by 2030 . The average age of an electrician is 45 years and older. 20% of electricians are expected to reach retirement age within 10 years. More are leaving the industry than coming into it. What's the end result. Their not enough electricians to fix and maintain our 👉 Electrical grid 👉 Appliances 👉 Electrical car charging needs 👉 Infrastructure How do we fix it, It simple 👉 Start recruiting at our schools and jobs fairs 👉 Work with trade or vocational schools to offer scholarships and apprenticeships. 👉 Provide increase in wages, benefits, pensions. The construction industry is aging, and we face major obstacles in recruiting for the future. None, however, that we can't overcome together.   We haven't effectively communicated our industry's wealth of meaningful career advancement pathways across a broad spectrum of firms, clients, and market dynamics. Entry to these avenues often come at an accelerated timeline compared to those of other career disciplines, with over 50% of workers in the construction industry having joined the construction workforce with a high school degree alone in 2020. Consider this statistic, combined with ever-strengthened and broadly-offered technical, vocational, apprenticeship, and associate programs, along with traditional higher education, and you've got the makings of a diverse young workforce with nowhere to go but up.   Will there be difficult days or weeks? Of course - this business comes with hard work and hard deadlines. But as our industry advances, particularly through the continued integration of technology and data, flexibility should be a more common theme across firms – enabling teams to achieve more balance between their personal and professional lives.   Fortunately, many leaders in our industry are focused on building things that will last - and that includes our firms, our teams, and our people – ensuring a bright future for the generations of talent to come.

Apprentice Week! How long are you working with AH? “I started in Alternative Heat as Commercial Administrator 2 years ago. Having previously worked in a commercial environment I was looking forward to working with the Quantity Surveyors to build my knowledge of Quantity Surveying in the construction industry”. Could you share why you decided to pursue an apprenticeship at Alternative Heat? “Given my interest in this field, Chris my manager, approached me with an opportunity: a Higher Level Apprenticeship (HLA) course in Digital Construction with a focus on Quantity Surveying offered at Newry SRC. This course was a pathway for career development Alternative Heat, transitioning me into the role of Trainee Quantity Surveyor. I could study part-time one day a week while gaining practical, hands-on experience for the remaining four days of the week.” Positives about the course: - Availability to earn a wage and study for a qualification at the same time was an offer I couldn’t refuse. - My team have been very supportive, providing valuable experience and knowledge, which has helped with my progression and studies for coursework and exams. In what ways has Alternative Heat supported you during your apprenticeship? “Alternative Heat has facilitated a seamless transition for me from full-time employment to part-time studies after years of being out of education. Their support during coursework and exams has made the experience much smoother and enjoyable, significantly reducing stress along the way." #apprenticeweek #trainee #quantitysurveyor #development
