A few years ago, I worked on developing the business case and economic model for the Clyde Waterfront and Renfrew Riverside project - the first opening road bridge across the River Clyde. Securing the Glasgow City Region Deal funding via the business case was a major milestone, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see the project now taking shape!
Congratulations to Norman Yardley and the team at Renfrewshire Council on taking it from concept to delivery, a great achievement.
To me, its worth highlighting why this is story worth celebrating:
The new bridge isn’t just about reducing travel time; it’s about bringing people together. It will better connect communities across the River Clyde, enhance access to jobs, education, and leisure, making daily life a little easier for everyone.
It’s also exciting to see economic theory put into practice, something that many Economist's don't always get to do. Over 700 construction jobs are already supporting families through this project, with more permanent roles expected to follow though the apprenticeships, work experience placements, school and college visits that have been included in the construction contract. The impact on local economies - on both sides of the river - can’t be overstated.
The bridge will also deliver much needed sustainable growth through integrated active travel, connecting to Yoker train station and the national cycling network. While this isn't something we quantified, just only 6 years ago, offering safer, greener travel options will create health and wellbeing benefits well into the future.
Finally, who doesn't love an awesome bridge?! (Peter Boesch)

The UK Government is supporting the infrastructure project as part of the £523m Glasgow City Region deal.
Great to see, Balfour Beatty plc!
