“When we speak about alternatives to enlargement, it essentially means doing nothing about the gray zones which Russia will continue trying to manipulate. It also means doing nothing about the fact that Europe will lose its role as a geopolitical player as soon as it stops being dynamic.” Maria Golubeva, Head of the Board, Baltic Initiative on European Reform, discusses the EU Enlargement 🇪🇺 with Rosa Balfour, Director at Carnegie Europe, and Dominik Tarczynski, Member of the Law and Justice Party in Poland at the Newsmakers. 🌐 #Newsmakers #EUEnlargement #EuropeanIntegration #BalticInitiative #Reform #Geopolitics #BalticEUReform https://lnkd.in/dAfP2Qg4

🇪🇺 On 15 May, the Baltic Initiative on European Reform, with the support of the Robert Bosch Stiftung and the Rīgas Ekonomikas augstskola - Stockholm School of Economics in Riga, held the Baltic Event on EU Enlargement ’24. The event brought together civil society representatives from the Baltic countries and EU experts to discuss EU enlargement and participate in working groups on the topics of the economy, rule of law and human rights, and geopolitics. 💬 The event began with a discussion with EU experts Professor Funda Tekin and Ian Bond on why we need EU enlargement and what might go wrong. It was concluded that it is necessary to focus on the security aspect, as enlargement plays an important role in the stabilization process for our neighborhood. Enlargement can help strengthen countries economically and build their institutional resilience. At the same time, there are risks regarding the countries meeting the reform standards, as well as ongoing disputes. Thus, more thoughts and discussions need to take place to tackle some of these questions. 💬 During the discussion on the Baltic perspective on EU enlargement, the experts concluded that the EU is, in some ways, our best hope for ensuring that many of these different identities are integrated. When assessing the past and how the Baltic States joined the EU, this was a clear example of how EU enlargement outweighed the negative concerns other EU countries might have had. By showcasing this successful example, the Baltic States can help move towards enlargement by 2030. 🗣 The event concluded with a discussion between European Parliament candidates Roberts Zīle, Ivanna Volochiy, and Elīna Pinto. It was agreed that it is necessary to find the best solutions for making a stronger EU. Enlargement could be used as a lever in this regard, as it is a matter of Europe’s credibility, security, solidarity, and resilience. ➡ Watch the discussions on our Youtube account and follow us on Facebook and LinkedIn to find out more about our upcoming events: https://lnkd.in/dt8jqG49 #BalticInitiative #BalticInitiativeEuropeanReform #EUEnlargement #EuropeanUnion #BalticEventEUEnlargement24
