Each of these interim deputy administrators- none of whom were mandated by the charter revision- gets a 6 month severance payment, or $209,000 each, if they work 6-12 months in their temporary positions. No one in the public or private sector gets such lush benefits. My concern lies in the fiscal irresponsibility inherent in awarding lavish severance packages, amounting to a staggering $1.3 million, to temporary employees whose impact on city services is destined to be short-lived. Severance should be reserved for extraordinary situations, not handed out routinely. Six months severance after possibly 6 months of work is way out of bounds for both private and public sectors. Providing lush severance packages on the taxpayers' dime is a slap in the face to the hardworking people of Portland. It sends the wrong message: that public servants can expect cushy safety nets even when their tenure is temporary.   That money could be better spent addressing urgent needs like public safety and transportation, which are currently struggling to identify adequate funding.

One of the more bittersweet sentiments captured by Ovetta Sampson of what so many of us black design leaders have been feeling and experiencing. It’s not just about leaving. You can’t help but think of those still there, still enduring. I have such mixed opinions and feelings on this, especially as someone who spends a great deal of time mentoring young designers. I do believe we have a responsibility to show the realities (good and bad) of what it means to work and grow in this industry. However, I think more importantly we need to be examples of what else design can do and offer beyond the traditional avenues, because there is in fact so much more. Many of us are still here, myself included. Instead, we chose to pivot and explore the peripherals of what else design could be. Building new disciplines, communities, and career paths to show other possibilities can exist. This statement reflects a great deal of honesty and self-awareness about what makes them unique, what their clients need from them, and what their goal should actually be day in and day out. In the latest edition of the Black Business Magazine our People Director Elsie Akinsanya shares her leadership journey and over 20 years’ experience to benefit others. In her experience, having this mindset over an extended period of time can be exhausting. Incessant comparison with others, how they perform and are treated can all play a part. However, Elsie has some words of advice based on her experience. “You show up all the time, don’t get to have off days, and that’s exhausting. One of the things I’m learning as a leader is that it’s crucial to run your own race and stop comparing yourself to others. As long as you adopt the right approach, which is to keep showing up every day and do the best you can for yourself, that’s all anyone can ask of you. ‘To truly flourish, companies must appreciate that these Black leaders have to uphold the traditional expectations of exceptional leadership in addition to other responsibilities required by community bonds’. Great article on how organisations (design and tech here but it’s applicable to every sector) can create the conditions for Black leaders to flourish: provide the power and influence to create change; retaining connection with the Black community; maintain an appreciation for Black culture; encourage conditions of grace in relation to how Black leaders engage with systems; provide opportunities to grow; create flexible working. Organisations often focus on diverse recruitment; this is an important reminder that creating the conditions for Black leaders to thrive is equally important.

A relationship is meant to be a healing presence in our lives. It's meant to add ease to paths, not create additional burdens. A relationship needs to feel safe. But how many of us have been in relationships, partnerships or even marriages where safety wasn't consistent or present at all? How any of us never witnesses what safety in a relationship actually looks like? While safety is not the only thing we need in a relationship, without feeling emotionally supported and safe, none of the other things are important no matter how much we prioritize them. Black Women leaders, we deserve to feel safe in every aspect of our lives, but especially in our romantic lives. Let me use my experience to help you find that safety.
