Guardians of the Earth: Investing in Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities – #AVPN2024 #OneAsiaOneFuture
Moderated by Liz Gillies, Menzies Foundation, CEO, this important session will explore the essential contributions of Indigenous Peoples in addressing global climate challenges, focusing on areas like reforestation, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable land management. Indigenous communities, while representing less than 5% of the global population, are the guardians of 80% of the world’s biodiversity. This session aims to address the challenges in funnelling climate finance to these frontline defenders against climate change.
With a lens on the importance of investing in Indigenous-led initiatives for sustainability, insights into Asia's climate funding landscape, and investment opportunities that support both environmental and women's economic empowerment. Panellists include:
• Kevin Currey, Program Officer, Ford Foundation
• Antoinette (Nonette) Royo, Executive Director, The International Land and Forest Tenure Facility
• H.E. Razan Al Mubarak, Managing Director, Species Conservation Fund
The session will equip philanthropists and private-sector funders with the necessary tools to overcome barriers that prevent effective climate finance from reaching Indigenous communities, highlighting successful models of engagement that ensure both environmental sustainability and socio-economic benefits for these vital yet underserved groups.
