I honestly love being a leader, and my favorite part is my team. Every day I’m given the opportunity to invest my time and energy into helping others get to their career goals. I’ve had associates make mistakes; some small, some not so small. Instead of responding in a shame and blame leadership style (which is a term I picked up from the book, “Dare to Lead”), we should respond with a leadership of empathy and understanding. We all know how it feels to be shame or blamed for a mistake or decision we have made. No one wants to make mistakes. No one wants to feel less than exceptional. No one wants to be wrong. Next time you have an associate make a mistake sit down with them. Straight talk the issue at hand, and together come up with a solution. Not only will it develop problem solving skills, but it builds trust and improves culture. I have always “KNOWN” this, but I got to experience firsthand last week. Associate made a mistake, but left my office feeling empowered, resilient, and more skilled to do their job. It was a reminder of why I love my job! I’m there to provide a culture of support, develop, and trust. ❤️

You know what's such a small lift but has a huge impact on your culture? Appreciation! And there are so many ways to show your appreciation. - A quick email thanking someone - A quick convo as you grab a coffee - A quick post on LinkedIn tagging someone - A quick note left on someone's desk - A quick "Great job recently. Appreciate you." during your one-on-one. You notice the trend... A thoughtful yet quick moment of appreciation for your team members is insanely valuable. It will boost morale. It will energize the team. And it will make your people know that you see them and appreciate them. Showing care doesn't always have to be grand-gestures. A simple "I appreciate you goes a long way."

Your team members will always remember your kindness. And the loyalty that comes with it will be invaluable. Work is a part of what we do, but being a team, trusting each other, and helping each other are equally important to us here at Meritus. Stop celebrating your team with generic compliments. Half-hearted praises such as “nice work” and “good job” can apply to anyone. Instead of these generic remarks, try to be specific when praising team members on LinkedIn. People feel the most valued when the praise is direct and precise. Next time you want to recognize a team member on LinkedIn, here are three things to include: 1. What did they do? Detail the actual task or accomplishment. 2. What impact did they have? Describe how their work positively impacted the organization. 3. What values/traits did they demonstrate? Outline their unique approach and style. Make your praise as great as their achievements - bland accolades don’t cut it.

We can only be responsible for our own actions and behavior. So, try your best to exhibit these eleven examples of integrity in the workplace and contribute toward a positive working environment for everyone: 1. Be there for other team members. 2. Try to improve your work ethic and productivity. 3. Help create a positive work environment. 4. Be able to be trusted and trust others with confidential information. 5. Strive for respectful, open communication. 6. Be accountable for your mistakes. 7. Always display trustworthiness and dependability. 8. Align with company values at all times. 9. Set a good example (be a role model for everyone). 10. Be willing to work hard and bring your true self every day. 11. Share opinions but keep them respectful.

Have manners, courtesy, and respect become the exception, not the norm? Say what you want about the first part of this quote, but the second section is on point. The only addition or extension is when you are part of a team, you represent them. It is even more vital that you stay true to your values and standards when others link their reputations to yours.
