🎉 Exciting to see Toledo Public Schools on the American Association of School Personnel Administrators 2024 recognition list for the William L. Hunter Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Award!
This #AASPA award recognizes districts making outstanding contributions through the implementation of innovative and comprehensive teacher and leader development programs primarily focused on strategies designed to increase staff diversity.
Research shows that urban and low-income schools encounter greater difficulty in recruiting qualified teachers (Ingersoll & May, 2016), principals (Carver-Thomas & Darling-Hammond, 2017), counselors (Miranda & Arredondo, 2020), school psychologists (Henderson et al., 2016), and paraprofessionals (Rockoff et al., 2011). One solution showing promise is providing current staff career advancement opportunities that result in increased responsibility, compensation, and impact. TPS refers to these programs as Grow Your Own (#GYO) and has 25 years of experience successfully targeting and filling traditionally hard-to-staff vacancies in high need schools.
TPS has found that implementing GYO strategies, providing support for individuals to ensure they can attain a license, and developing comprehensive recruiting materials to attract candidates can help the district work towards a more diverse teacher and administrator workforce.
Given the state of educator staffing shortages, these programs have become essential in filling vacancies. TPS has seven current and active programs built to develop and support individuals interested in teaching or leading in a TPS building. All of these innovative programs have worked to increase the number of teachers in classrooms and leaders in buildings!
TPS is always looking to lead the way and do what is best for students!

📽 Have you checked out this video with Dr Vikki Smith from the Education and Training Foundation and me (Gavin O'Meara) on the FE & Skills Collective: Timing and how you can get involved.. and how you can help shape the future of our Skills system!
🗓 The FE + Skills Collective is on the 10th October in Birmingham and is all about equipping our educators and leaders for our future skills system. This is in partnership with ETF and FE News. The event and the report is:
Bridging Policy and #Pedagogy: Preparing educators and leaders for a stronger skills system
📺 Check out the video below and we'd love to see you on the 10th Oct and for you to get involved!
😎 The Collectives are very cool... and a very different style of event, the morning is all about 'scene setting' and the afternoon everyone works together in collaborative groups to help shape a report... and that report co-author is Vikki... so check out the video below and we'd love for you to join us!
😕 It is cool that there is literally an announcement per day at the moment on our new skills system, new policies, new language and jargon, new departments to work with... but this could also be confusing! ❔
💡 So the idea of the event is to equip our educators and leaders and also create a report on how everyone in the skills system (from training providers, to colleges, Awarding Organisations, Lifelong learning providers, Prison / Offender Learning... everyone in FE and Skills) can work with the new Government and new departments now and into the future.

I have a professional update to celebrate (and others to come!).
I have been selected the 2024 Educator of the Year by the Minnesota State Board of Trustees. This is the highest honor award for excellence in teaching in the entire Minnesota State system. Only 4 are selected out of dozens of applications.
I am grateful to have several mentors and inspiring students in my professional journey who motivated me to pursue better and more innovative ways to delivery my teaching and to connect students to more relatable experiences and real world examples with maintaining high academic rigor.
Some of my innovations include mixing a traditional course on Labor Economics with a study abroad component, jigsaw activities to discussed peer-reviewed articles, simulations of immigration process experiences, Pre and Post Debates, self introductions in online courses with sharing gratitude and savoring experiences, and incorporating students to real data to analyze local issues.
Further, my activities also include direct discussions on equity, disparities, implicit bias, and examples that demystify the economics profession. #IlookLikeAnEconomist
Four SCSU employees were recently honored in the annual Minnesota State Board of Trustees Awards for Excellence. Congrats to Monica Garcia-Perez (Educators of the Year), Dale Buske (Outstanding Educators), John Mirth (Outstanding Educators) and Christine Lepkowski (Outstanding Service Faculty) for their work!

2024 National Business Educator of the Year * 2022 WBEA Outstanding High School Business Educator * 2021 OCEE and 2019 OBEA Teacher of the Year * Accounting/Finance Educator * CTE * College Now Liaison * NGPF Fellow
Hands down the most effective conference for educators of personal finance. Not only has the national team of Laura L. Levine Dan Hebert Joel Chrisler and many more, mastered hosting a comprehensive conference with a teacher-centered focus (it's in their mission!), they are doing incredible work ALL year long to promote why this content is critical to our nation's youth.
I have leaned on all three of these individuals at one time or another since discovering their work, and often stated that #JumpStartNEC changed my classroom, not only for me, but for my students.
(Mystic Dan) #DanTheMan, Laura, Joel, the entire JumpStart Team...I appreciate you for wanting my classroom to be better in providing high-quality, highly-engaging personal finance resources for ALL of my students. I wish State Departments of Education understood how this work has been comprehensive for many years, not just convenient timing in recent headlines. You understand the data and the importance of doing this correctly.
Apply today!!
So Mystic Dan won the Kentucky Derby this weekend! (see what I did there?) Guess who's going to win in Louisville this November? Teachers! Would you consider sponsoring a scholarship for them to attend? https://lnkd.in/e8jePq_Q
Yesterday in Washington, DC, CAAHEP President Donald Balasa, JD, MBA, delivered an enlightening session on "Beyond Gainful Employment: Other Title IV Rule Revisions that Impact Quality and Eligibility" at the prestigious CHEA/CIQG Annual Conference.
The landscape of higher education and the implications of Title IV of the Higher Education Act (HEA) are evolving, and Balasa's talk shed light on crucial changes every professional program must be aware of.
Key takeaways include:
-Ensuring graduates are eligible for mandatory state licensing/certification exams.
-Avoiding the inclusion of courses that are unnecessary for meeting state licensing/certification requirements.
For students to benefit from Title IV assistance, these stipulations underscore the dual necessity for compliance and quality in the curriculum of our professional programs.
This conversation is vital for maintaining the integrity of our educational frameworks. Join the dialogue and share your perspectives on how these revisions may shape the future of professional education!
