Reflecting on the incredible Placemaking Europe Week in my beloved city, Rotterdam!
I can’t think of any other event where everyone is so eager to share their knowledge. It was truly inspiring to connect with amazing people from all around the globe, all passionate about making the world a more beautiful, inclusive, climate-adaptive, and socially vibrant place.
A heartfelt thank you to all the fellow placemakers who traveled to Rotterdam to share their insights. Your contributions made this week unforgettable!
I’m also grateful to Placemaking Europe for allowing me to contribute through four engaging sessions:
– Collaborating with Eddy Kaijser and Bert Determann to envision a future for Schouwburgplein that truly reflects Rotterdam’s spirit.
– A special shoutout to my daughter, Twila, for her fantastic assistance in explaining the discounted cash flow method to my fellow placemakers. This fundamental tool is essential for effective placemaking in large-scale area development.
– Together with my fellow ‘luwte ministers’ martine sluijs, Sander van der Ham, and Kaat Smets, we highlighted the importance of creating quiet places and the art of tranquil placemaking.
One of the highlights was moderating a session where Clémentine Robert from Nantes and Giulia Sicignano from Milan shared how they hack governance systems in their cities to facilitate large-scale community participation and placemaking. It was fascinating to see the cultural differences and similarities!
A big thank you to the city of Rotterdam for letting me celebrate six outstanding local placemakers at our dinner. Mildred Pijnenborg, Paul Elleswijk, Martin Van Rijn, Bart van de Worp, Lenard Vunderink, and Bram van der Linde, it was fantastic to have you all there!
Kudos to Sarah van Schaik and Zhenja for organizing such a great event.
And of course, I’m thrilled about placing three of our Flocci’s at the Katoenhuis.
What a week it has been! Here’s to the shared knowledge, the connections made, and the collective effort to create better spaces for everyone.
