China's control over wafer, polysilicon, and cell pricing presents significant hurdles for the EU, and India's desire to be a leader in the market will only add to the pressure. While there may be very short-term successes for those eyeing the US market, sustaining competitiveness against China and India requires more strategic approaches. 📢 China's Photovoltaic Industry Tackles Irrational Competition On October 14th, the China Photovoltaic Industry Association convened a major meeting in Shanghai with key players from across the supply chain, including leaders from LONGi, Tongwei, Jinko, JA Solar, and more. The goal? To address the growing irrational competition and oversupply in the market. Recent data shows that despite a production surge—polysilicon, wafers, and modules increased over 32%—prices have fallen sharply, with polysilicon and wafer prices down over 40%. This is a fun discovery! Apparently they are building a peaking power station in China that is costing 900 MUSD and will produce 320k MWh per year. If I whip out the good 'ol Excel and set the WACC at 6%, the energy cost is $290/MWh, or $220/MWh for 2% WACC. Maybe there's (a lot of) subsidy here? I could also imagine that imbalance markets could make this plant highly profitable. #hydrogen #greenhydrogen #hydrogeneconomy

The fair and unfair advantages of being a Chinese manufacturer. Most discussions about reshoring solar manufacturing make the suspected use of forced labor and generous state subsidies the main culprits for the collapse of European production. But this is missing some legit structural advantages that the Chinese manufacturers possess. Huge benefits of scale, well developed export support ecosystem (e.g. Sinosure), capital availability, facilitated investment permitting - the list goes on. Let's just focus on benefits of scale for now. We all read announcements about "gigafactories" to be open across Europe and the US: 1 GW in Poland, 2 GW in Romania, 3 GW in USA... Sometimes these plans include cell manufacturing - but that's hardly a rule. Well, at the same time Jinko announced the construction of a 56 GW fully vertically integrated factory: ingots -> wafers -> cells -> modules. Yes, you read that right. Not "five-to-six" GW. "FIFTY SIX" GW. Of course, this is a direct results of China's internal demand. The huge, consolidated domestic market gives the emerging players the ability to scale before they go on competing on the global stage. When Tongwei launched module manufacturing in 2022, they did not plan to be a smallish 1 or 2 GW manufacturer. They went directly for 20 GW+ numbers in their first year. And they could do that, because Chinese demand provided an estimated 90% of the initial orders, giving the company the springboard for a future international expansion. It can't happen in Europe, as long as every country would love to have its own plant. Or, better still, a few plants. That just means we will pay extra for our inability to consolidate our markets and reap the benefits of scale. And we should not overlook that in our discussions about reshoring solar components manufacturing. 🌟 Exciting Developments at the 2024 World Power Battery Conference! 🌟 A total of 137 projects with a combined investment of 95.25 billion yuan (about 13.4 billion U.S. dollars) were signed at the conference, which opened on Sunday in Yibin, Sichuan Province. The event attracted nearly 400 industry experts and company executives from around the globe. Hosted by the Sichuan provincial government, the conference aims to build an international cooperation platform for the development of the power battery industry and promote the high-quality development of green and low-carbon industries. 🔋 Key Highlights: - 133 projects with a combined investment of 84.55 billion yuan will be located in Yibin. - These projects are expected to generate a combined annual output value of more than 100 billion yuan and create over 20,000 jobs when fully operational.
