This morning I was on 3CR Community Radio talking about my new paper on the coloniality of drug prohibition. The host Inez asked some awesome questions! You can listen here (interview starts at 00:47:50) https://lnkd.in/gSQYkiU6 We spoke about how I am connected to the topic through family history of genocide; the importance of acknowledging the colonial function of drug law, to deny or undermine First Nations people's claim to the land; how legal and medical systems work together to criminalise colonised peoples; why public health research needs to develop a politics of solidarity with First Nations communities that it does research with; and how hyper-focus on trauma leaves little room to talk about how it is a normal response to colonial violence. We didn’t get to this last part, but where to from here is a really important conversation. The words of Gunditjmara, Dja Dja Wurrung, Wiradjuri and Yorta Yorta woman Veronica Nelson’s family say it best. In a statement following hearings related to her death in state custody, a death that has been demonstrated to at least in part involve drug and addiction-related stigma, the Nelson family have called on the Victorian Government to: “transfer decision-making power, authority, control and resources to Aboriginal communities in both the criminal legal system and the child protection system. That is what self-determination is”. There are so many Indigenous night patrols, First Nations-led detached social work services, & networks of Aboriginal legal & community health services that are chronically underfunded who are far better equipped to deal with drug use in the community than the very well-funded state police.

The only systemic problem in America is not racism, it's the lying,cheating sellouts in our government. Previously we looked at the connection between the music industry and social issues, including but not limited to: abortion, queer community, criminalization of addiction, as well as climate change. Now a new case in the Supreme Court could be threatening environmental sustainability. Should Gorsuch's personal interests in the case be enough to recuse himself from it? Could Anschutz profit off these decisions? Despite initial reservations as a Black woman in the cannabis sector, she is now focused on growing her firm and assisting newcomers through consulting. However, not everyone in the predominantly Black suburb shares Wiseman's enthusiasm. County legislators are divided on whether dispensaries should be located prominently or in industrial areas, mirroring a larger debate about the impact of cannabis legalization on communities. Despite Maryland allowing recreational cannabis in 2022, dispensaries face substantial opposition in Prince George's County. Wiseman, the country's youngest Black woman to run a dispensary, underscores the value of patience and resilience in overcoming industry challenges.
