On this significant day of June 19th, we at OpenQQuantify honor Juneteenth, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. As we reflect on freedom and equality, we are reminded of the importance of ensuring that all communities, especially the Black community, have equal access to opportunities and resources and are given the same opportunities as everyone. Technology and electronics have the power to transform lives, driving innovation, education, and economic growth, if used maliciously, they have the power to control wreck chaos. At OpenQQuantify, we are committed to making sure that everyone, not just a select few, can take advantage of these transformative tools. We could NEVER see it another way! Community is more important then the likes of people that use technology to enforce control or their own agendas. Together we are strong; divided, we are weak. Our mission: To bridge the digital divide by providing accessible and affordable electronics and a platform the community can develop embedded systems and electronics on. To support STEM education in underserved communities, inspiring the next generation of engineers, scientists, and innovators. To foster an inclusive environment where diversity thrives and every voice is heard. This Juneteenth, let's unite in our efforts to promote equality in technology. By empowering the underserved community with the tools and knowledge needed to excel in the digital age, we can build a future where opportunities are limitless and everyone can thrive. Join us in celebrating Juneteenth and our commitment to making technology a force for good in every community. Together, we can create a more equitable and inclusive world. #Juneteenth #EqualityInTech #EmpowermentThroughElectronics #OpenQQuantify

This post from my alma mater Michigan Tech College of Engineering is worth reading.
"I was a first-generation college student without a traditional family support system. This topic is so important to me. For me, advocating for diversity, equity and inclusion is about access and equity in opportunity. Much of my work focuses on helping underrepresented students both discover opportunities available to them AND feel like they are worthy of accessing them. My passion is primarily in working with young people to see that Michigan Tech is a place where they can create their own identity and journey regardless of any barriers they perceive. So many people were influential in showing me how and why it’s important to advocate. My first professional mentor was Dar (Slade) Morris, but I think I have learned the most from the many students I have worked with over the years, especially underrepresented and people of color, from youth to graduate students. Their stories are always an opportunity to learn from and demonstrate compassion for the human experience.” –Cassy Tefft de Muñoz, Executive Director for the Center for Educational Outreach In keeping with the 2024 #WomensHistoryMonth National Women’s History Alliance theme, "Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion,” we asked some of our most outstanding equity advancers for their perspectives on the theme as it applies to our work here at Tech. We asked why it’s important to advocate and who helped to influence their efforts.

The tech industry needs to be more inclusive. We can help make a difference in the industry this Black Business Month by listening and learning from other people’s lived experiences, and ensuring everyone has a voice that is heard. These are just a few Black-led organizations doing exceptional work in tech. Learn more about what they’re doing and give them a follow. Black Boys Code strives to make the world of computer programming accessible for Black youth through engaging workshops, after-school programs, exciting summer camps, and other initiatives. They currently have 12 chapters across Canada and are expanding into the United States to reach even more youth. Black Women Talk Tech is a collective of Black women tech founders whose mission is to help Black women dream big and build the next billion-dollar tech or scalable company. They offer a variety of programming, including virtual and in-person events, a membership platform, and investor matchmaking. SMASH was one of the first STEM education programs in the United States aimed at preparing students of color for Computer Science college studies. Since launching in 2024, they’ve been empowering their students through intensive education, culturally relevant coursework, and access to resources, aiming to cultivate success in college and careers. #BlackBusinessMonth #TechForGood #STEM

from Pittsburgh Yards® based #gethype_inc Last Thursday, Kristina Newton, Founder & CEO of HYPE, took the lead at the Dream Clinic, where she empowered the girls to explore opportunities in tech. After an impactful session, she sat down with Josh Skinner from Atlanta News First to discuss HYPE's vital mission: tackling the tech industry's leaky pipeline by building a strong network through intentional exploration, education, and empowerment. The numbers speak for themselves: * Only 2.2% of women in tech identify as Black. * Only 1.7% identify as Latinx. * Of all high school students taking AP Computer Science, just 4% are Latinx, only 2% are Black girls, and less than 1% are Native American. HYPE is on a mission to change these statistics, creating a more inclusive tech future. Together, we’re working hard to increase the pipeline of talented women of color in tech. #WomenInTech #HYPE #DreamClinic #DiversityInTech #STEM #WomenEmpowerment Walter Slaton

Judith Spitz, a trailblazer in tech, is making waves with her nonprofit Break Through Tech, and it’s not just talk—she’s making real changes. After a stellar 30-year career at Verizon, where she became the chief information officer, she left in 2016 to oversee a City University of New York initiative that led to a 94 percent increase in undergraduate women enrolled in computer science classes. Judith Spitz and her team are not just talking about change—they’re making it happen. If you’re passionate about seeing more diversity in tech, Break Through Tech is definitely a group to watch! How do you get young girls believing they can do things in life? ❔️ 🛠 🧰 Why, you set them up with power tools to build things in the shop, of course! You may quibble with that idea, but Girls at Work, Inc. runs with it, and it's been incredibly effective. After my good friend Flo Nicolas, J.D. checked them out a few months ago, I knew I had to see it for myself. The opportunity finally came on Friday. The space is unassuming at first glance. It's not until you go into the rooms set up with the power tools and wood that you start to understand what happens here. 👷♀️ You can see what girls who have been through the program have built - it's all over. Bigger than that, though, are the stories. ▶️ The girls who come through this program are not ones who have a lot. They don't come from rich, peaceful households. In fact, most of those in the program are in it at no cost. The program gets support from a variety of sources, as any difference-making program like it does. ➡️ Some of these girls come from the worst of the worst backgrounds, and some of them come in not believing they can do anything. ☹️ In many cases, it's because that's the message they have consistently received. Some come in with no one taking an interest in them. ✅️ The staff does amazing work getting them to realize they have immense value and can do many things. The goal isn't to turn these girls into future construction workers, although that is an option. ➡️ Using those power tools to build is a vehicle for getting them to build something, to complete something, and to see what they can accomplish. 💭 And as I heard some of the stories, it reminds me of something all of us should do: show an interest in others. I have seen gratitude I couldn't imagine from the simple act of showing an interest in someone. All of this is interesting to think about as we approach a big event on women in tech on Wednesday in Portsmouth as well, which I look forward to. (Link will be in the comments.) ✅️ One day, some of the girls who come through Girls at Work may show up on a panel like that one, just for starters.
