India's Northeast Region (NER) is known for its biodiversity and diverse ecosystems, supported by traditional knowledge and community-based conservation. The intrinsic relationship between indigenous people and forests, rooted in culture and religion, benefits biodiversity through traditional management practices like sacred forests and village reserves. While Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) concept has emerged as a promising solution for environmental conservation and rural development, it faces issues such as lack of inclusivity and inadequate consideration of social impacts. Through shared insights and meaningful dialogue, the workshop will identify avenues to foster collaboration and strategic partnerships among non-profit organisations, philanthropic, and government stakeholders towards empowering community agencies in the NER. Through discussions and cross-learning, the workshop aims to lay the foundation of a collaborative action plan for PES markets in the NER ecosystem. Looking forward! #Mangrove Plantation Drive (The community Forest program): Reiterating it’s commitment towards the environment and empowerment of the underprivileged people, #HPL has planted over 30,000 mangroves in 2023-24 as a part of The Community Forest Program at #Sundarban in collaboration with Kolkata Society For Cultural Heritage (KSCH) . At the village of Sonagarh, Sajnekhali, Block- Gosaba, the program ran for a period of 4 and half months to complete cultivation and plantation process followed by 3 years of maintenance of the plants to yield the best result. During severe storms and #cyclones, the mangroves serve as a vital lifeline for the inhabitants of this region, protecting coastland by absorbing the energy of storm-driven waves and wind action, creating an effect of a natural breakwater. Mangroves also help to trap debris and silt, contributing to soil formation and stabilizing the coastline, control pollution etc. Over 1000 people (majorly women) from the villages of Sonagarh, Sajnekhali took part in this program and it also helped them generate income to sustain their livelihoods. We are committed to contribute more for environmental development in the days to come. #csr #hpl #mangroveplantation #sundarban #savetheenvironment #tcgfoundation #womenempowerment #poweringprogress

During a recent field trip, I had the eye-opening opportunity to explore the Bhubaneswar Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs). These facilities play a critical role in safeguarding the city's environment and public health, treating a staggering 28 million litres of wastewater daily for a population of 4 million! Here's what impressed me most: Efficient Wastewater Management: Wastewater from 14 pumping stations flows directly into the STP for prompt treatment, preventing contamination. Multi-Stage Purification: A three-compartment system with aerated grids separates solid waste, followed by four tanks with settling, decanting, and chlorine dosing - ensuring thorough purification and adherence to safety standards. Sustainable Reuse: Treated wastewater isn't wasted! It finds valuable applications in construction and gardening, promoting water conservation and resource utilization. Live Monitoring: Each pumping station is monitored in real-time for optimal performance. Social Inclusion in Action: The septage treatment facility, handling sludge from the STP, is staffed entirely by 9 transgender individuals, promoting social inclusion and economic empowerment. Beyond the impressive technology, it was the focus on sustainability and social impact that truly resonated. These unseen heroes play a vital role in protecting our environment and creating a more inclusive society. #wastewatertreatment #sustainability #bhubaneswar #circulareconomy #socialimpact

A mission that I am committed to (Creating a future-ready, liveable environment for our communities), a corporate #RioTinto and their committed team that I enjoy collaborating with, and a project that is close to my heart (#PANI - Providing & Augmenting Natural-resource based Intervention). Through this initiative, we're addressing critical issues faced in rural and urban India, particularly the growing challenges posed by climate change and water scarcity. While conserving water is crucial, it’s equally important to recharge groundwater and harvest rainwater—both vital for creating sustainable solutions. As the effects of climate change become more visible, it’s on us to build a future where our next generations can thrive. Come and understand from us the real issues that rural and urban India is facing around Water & let’s work together to create lasting change. 🌱 #ClimateAction #WaterConservation #Sustainability #FutureReady #PANI #ClimateChange #GroundwaterRecharge #RioTinto
Creating a future-ready, liveable environment for communities. #Gurugram is known for its rapid urban growth, ranking #1 in IT growth and #2 in the start-up ecosystem across India. However, there’s another side to this bustling district – its rural communities face severe challenges. In Sohna, a rapidly growing block in Gurugram, #groundwater is depleting at an alarming rate due to over-extraction, urbanization, and climate change. Residents often rely on private water tankers, leading to higher costs and unequal access to water. #Agriculture, a major livelihood in the region, is also severely affected, with declining water tables and erratic monsoon patterns causing water shortages for irrigation. At #OneStage, under our flagship initiative #PANI (Providing & Augmenting Natural-resource based Intervention), we are committed to improving the quality of life in rural India. With the support of Rio Tinto, we have restored a waterbody in #Abheypur village (Sohna Block, Gurugram), helping to address the severe water crisis in the area. The revived pond will recharge groundwater, support irrigation, and provide drinking water for the community. This is our second such project with Rio Tinto. The project was handed over to the community in the presence of Rio Tinto leadership, the Block Development Officer, Panchayat officials, and local villagers. The revival was especially celebrated by local women, who see it as a hopeful step toward a better future. Together, we are building a better tomorrow. #EveryoneDeservesEqual #WaterConservation #Sustainability #RuralDevelopment #GroundwaterRecharge #CommunityImpact #ClimateAction #RioTinto Sharlene Cosgrave Nitin Sahai Harish Rautela (PMP)®Seema Sharma Chandana Baro Shubhra Banerjee Batra Rahul Dahiya Punit Kumar Pratik Sharma Ratika Jain Sujit Kumar Sahu, M. An Urban Planner, A Content & Social Media Manager, and An Odissi Dancer: Exploring the Intersection of Culture and Community
🌳 Odisha, Let's Green Our Future Together! 🌳 As we approach the coming monsoon, we have a unique opportunity to make a significant impact on our environment and future. The latest report from the National Commission's Technical Group projects Odisha's population to reach 4.66 crore by July 1, 2024, and 4.91 crore by 2036. To ensure we meet the oxygen needs of our growing population across 115 ULBs, 58 sub-divisions, 317 Tahasils, 314 blocks, 6,801 Gram Panchayats, and 51,349 villages, we need to plant 326.2 million trees. Let's start with a modest yet impactful goal: 4.5 crore trees this monsoon season! 🌱 Why Should You Participate? 1️⃣ Healthier Air: More trees mean cleaner, oxygen-rich air for everyone. 2️⃣ Combat Climate Change: Trees absorb CO2, helping to mitigate global warming. 3️⃣ Biodiversity Boost: More trees provide habitats for diverse wildlife. 4️⃣ Community Strength: Planting trees brings people together for a common cause. 🌟 How Can You Contribute? 1️⃣ Plant a Tree: Whether in your backyard, community spaces, or public parks, every tree counts. 2️⃣ Join a Local Initiative: Many communities and organizations will host planting drives – get involved! 3️⃣ Spread the Word: Encourage your friends, family, and colleagues to participate. 4️⃣ Support Sustainable Practices: Advocate for and support policies that promote environmental sustainability. If every municipal corporation takes a step to conduct a massive plantathon, we can achieve this goal together! Together, we can create a greener, healthier, and more sustainable Odisha. Let’s leave a legacy of lush forests and clean air for our future generations. 🌏 Join the movement. Plant a tree. Nurture our planet. #GreenOdisha #TreePlanting #SustainableFuture #MonsoonMission #OxygenForAll #CommunityEffort #PlantATree #Odisha #India

To write the success story of sustainable smart city, the city must learn the ABC of composting. Varanasi just did that! GIZ India initiated a project to setup micro compositing units in Varanasi, so that the kitchen waste generated by the colonies can be self managed by the community. Balancing bits has Setup, initiated and stabilized operations and handed over two micro compositing sites of capacity 50KG/day at AEN Railway Colony and Shaheed Udyan Park, Varanasi. Since their setup in March, 2023 till the handover on February, 2024 these plants processed 10,500 Kgs of waste. And this impact is going to get repeated every year. And the impact will be compounded if more such micro composting units will be set-up replicating these successful models. Is your city ready to learn the ABC of composting? House sparrows (Passer domesticus), in Latin Passer means "small active bird" and Domesticus indicates "found near human dwellings". These birds have been living near human dwellings for nearly 10,000 years. their nesting habits often include building nests in trees, shrubs, and man-made structures. The Guwahati - Shillong (GS) Road in Guwahati, a bustling urban area, provides both challenges and opportunities for these birds.Trees along the GS Road provide crucial nesting sites to the bird population.Hence, it is important that the trees are healthy and not felled or pruned excessively. These trees not only provide nesting sites but also food sources in the form of insects and plant material. Increasing the number of trees and green spaces along the GS Road and other places of the Guwahati City can help support a larger population of house sparrows and other urban wildlife.Urban pollution can impact the health of both the birds and the trees. Measures to reduce air and noise pollution can create a more hospitable environment for wildlife.Informing the public about the importance of sparrows and urban biodiversity can foster community support for conservation efforts. At the same time encouraging local communities to participate in planting and caring for trees can enhance conservation efforts. #UrbanBiodiversity #UrbanGreenSpace #TreeCover #GuwahatiCity #HouseSparrow
