Counting down to the new year, we're highlighting the release of new report, “Investments in Student Recovery: A Review of School Districts’ Use of American Rescue Plan Funding to Support Afterschool and Summer Opportunities,” that found that more than 8 in 10 school districts dedicated some ARP ESSER funds to afterschool and summer opportunities, most ARP ESSER summer interventions focused on academic remediation or recovery only, and more! https://lnkd.in/e9UrVM8S

It's not too late to join today's webinar and learn how to utilize federal work study to leverage high-impact tutoring in your community!
Excited for this Wednesday's conversation about sustaining high-impact tutoring for the long-term! For generations, families with economic means have used tutors to help their children academically. In the wake of the COVID pandemic, most districts adopted or expanded initiatives to provide tutoring through schools to the students that need it most - not just those whose parents can pay for it. With the upcoming sunset of ESSER funds, districts are now facing big decisions about how to sustain quality tutoring initiatives over time. Developing a tutoring corps and tapping Federal Work-Study dollars are promising strategies that deserve a deeper look. I'm excited to hear the insights and perspectives from this power-trio of speakers, including Nancy Waymack at NSSA, Nati Rodriguez at Annenberg Learner, and Hermineh Markosyan, Principal at LAUSD's John B. Monlux Elementary. Wednesday, May 22, 3-4pm PT. “While the work of advancing educational equity is broad and varied, our experiences together share two key commonalities: First, these efforts are successful when they are supported by both youth and adults. Second, they are most successful when they are supported by the schools themselves, through resources, funding, time and access to opportunities.”- Powerful piece written by my UP youth and adult colleagues!

Here’s an unexpected fact: Educational Alliance manages a bee hive. And here’s an unexpected reason: to change lives. At Educational Alliance, we run afterschool and summer programs for over 800 children in lower Manhattan. These students attend public schools that often lack ample resources for enrichment. Additionally, many of the children are dealing with tough situations at home: some live in shelters, others are undocumented, and quite a few need more educational support than their schools can provide. The bee hive that our students maintain is just one example of how we expose them to experiences that are unusual, intriguing, and educational. There’s a long list of what else they experience in our programs: trips to colleges, tutoring, homework help, visits to museums, music instruction, hands-on science, and much more. The history of the Lower East Side is filled with stories of immigrants who came to this country and a spark was ignited that allowed them to flourish and to excel. They became entrepreneurs, scientists, and civic leaders. Educational Alliance was at the center of many of those stories. We’re still here doing that same work throughout lower Manhattan, helping kids to discover all the potential that lies within themselves. A few weeks ago, Educational Alliance learned that we had been awarded a five-year grant from New York State to make our afterschool programs even stronger and more enriching. In the video below - in which I interview Shawnia White, the Senior Director of Programs for our afterschool and summer programs - we discuss what we do and what this grant will mean for the hundreds of children and families that we serve here in Lower Manhattan. #nyc #education #nycschools #bees

Summer is around the corner, and it's a time when kids often lose momentum in their studies—a phenomenon commonly known as the summer slide. The article I came across emphasizes the importance of community partnerships in combatting this issue. Here are some practical steps to consider for keeping kids engaged this summer: 1. Encourage local organizations to create enriching programs focused on reading, math, or arts. 2. Set up a summer reading challenge with prizes to motivate daily reading habits. 3. Organize community events where families can collaborate on fun learning projects. 4. Utilize technology wisely by introducing educational apps that make learning fun. By implementing these strategies, the aim is to ensure that children return to school in the fall not only ready to learn but excited about their progress. I'd love to hear about your own experiences or any additional tips you might have for preventing summer slide. What has worked for you? https://lnkd.in/gxrBqGCQ

It may be #backtoschool season, but we know preparing for #summerlearning begins now! Led by the nonprofit FHI 360, the Wallace-funded DSLN has helped more than 100 districts across six states design, carry out, and sustain high-quality, evidence-based summer learning programs that prepare students for academic success and support their well-being. A research team at NYU Metro Center is studying the effort. The team is producing a series of “Summer Snapshots” to highlight how districts across the country are reimagining what a summer program can be. This first summer snapshot focuses on high school students faced with making up class credits over the summer. It examines how two school districts, Manchester Public School District, in Connecticut, and Oakland Unified School District, in California, have reinvented their programs to take a more holistic approach to academics and enrichment over the summer. They are moving beyond credit makeup to accelerate learning and better prepare students for the upcoming year.
