Development and Optimization of Hydrogen-Powered Autonomous Rovers for Extraterrestrial Exploration A solar hydrogen fuel cell robo rover operates by harnessing renewable energy sources to ensure continuous and efficient power supply. During the day, solar panels convert sunlight into electrical energy through photovoltaic cells. The power output (P) of the solar panel can be calculated using the equation: P=ηAE where η is the efficiency of the solar panel, A is the area of the solar panel, and E is the solar irradiance. This energy is used directly to power the rover or is stored in batteries for later use. Additionally, excess solar energy can drive an electrolyzer to produce hydrogen by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen through electrolysis, represented by the equation: 2H2O(l)→2H2(g)+O2(g) At night or during periods of low sunlight, the rover relies on stored energy in batteries and hydrogen fuel cells. The hydrogen fuel cells convert the stored hydrogen into electricity by combining it with oxygen from the air, producing water and energy through the reaction: 2H2(g)+O2(g)→2H2O(l)+energy The electrical energy output of the fuel cell is determined by: Efc=n⋅ΔG where n is the number of moles of hydrogen and ΔG is the Gibbs free energy change for the reaction per mole. The onboard control system manages the distribution of power from these sources, ensuring efficient operation by optimizing energy consumption. This hybrid energy approach enables the rover to maintain extended operational time, environmental friendliness, and versatility in diverse and remote environments. We live in exciting times where several technologies are vying for the top spot in transportation and power generation. In transportation, the current frontrunners appear to be electric and hydrogen vehicles. While in power generation, it seems there are dozens of methods of turning that rotor inside the stator. In the long run, it may the application that dictates the method. BATTERY TECHNOLOGY: PowerCell Group to retrofit two 100kW marine fuel cell systems on Bangor University’s hydrogen-electric research vessel PowerCell has signed an order for two 100kW marine fuel cell systems from O.S. Energy for the Transship II sustainable vessel project. This initiative will focus on retrofitting Bangor University’s research vessel Prince Madog with a #hydrogenelectric hybrid propulsion system. Richard Berkling, CEO of PowerCell Sweden, said, “Our marine fuel cell systems offer several benefits over traditional diesel generator sets, including zero emissions, silent operation and exceptional reliability.” Martin Nuernberg, managing director of O.S. HELENA, the EV battery project with an awkward acronym, has reached a major milestone in their "Halide solid state batteries for ELectric vEhicles aNd Aircraft" project. They have successfully assembled solid-state battery cells with a halide electrolyte, lithium metal anode, and a nickel-manganese-cobalt cathode. What's even more impressive is that the new cells can cycle at high currents and low temperatures while maintaining a high level of thermal stability. This is a significant development from a fire safety perspective. HELENA has also demonstrated that it is possible to work with this halide in dry room conditions, thus opening up real possibilities for its application in industry. Would you like to see this future happen? Future Signal Researchers have developed an improved "blue energy" harvesting device that can more effectively capture the energy from ocean waves. The device, called a liquid–solid triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), converts mechanical energy from water sloshing back and forth into electricity. By repositioning the electrode from the center of the tube to the end where the water crashes with the most force, the researchers were able to dramatically increase the amount of wave energy that could be harvested. In one experiment, the optimized TENG was able to power an array of 35 LEDs as water entered and exited the section of the tube covered by the electrode.
