#Sludge News 💥💥💥 Interesting Article: [Denali] Currey singles out the restrictions on phosphorus as being “overly burdensome.” “I’m all for the DNR regulating pollutants, but not nutrients,” he said. “If we [soil] test a [land application] field, and it’s too high in phosphorus, we’ll have to haul [our product] farther away, and it will drive costs up.” Really? Can excess Nutrients not be toxic? The impact of excess nutrients LIKE phosphorus is not a theory. It's being seen on rivers, lakes, and watersheds all over the United States right now. From Lake Erie to Lake Champlain to the Chesapeake Bay to the once pristine streams of the Ozarks, and down the Mississippi into the Gulf, #phosphorus runoff from agricultural fields, urban areas, and industrial sources continue to lead to eutrophication, a process where excessive #nutrients cause #algalblooms. These blooms deplete oxygen levels in the water, leading to fish kills, harming aquatic ecosystems and even posing risks to #humanhealth through contaminated drinking #water and recreational activities. When doing the right thing for the land, like testing and controlling nutrient toxicity in the waste that you are land applying puts limitations on a business model, you may need to rethink your business. *Kendrick Lamar scream* "Nitrogen, phosphorus, chloride, oil and cyanide were among the 371m lbs of pollutants released into waterways by just 41 Tyson slaughterhouses and mega processing plants between 2018 and 2022. According to research by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), the contaminants were dispersed in 87bn gallons of wastewater – which also contains blood, bacteria and animal feces – and released directly into streams, rivers, lakes and wetlands relied on for drinking water, fishing and recreation. The UCS analysis, shared exclusively with the Guardian, is based on the most recent publicly available water pollution data Tyson is required to report under current regulations. In 2023, the meat-processing sector spent $4.3 million on lobbying efforts in Washington. Tyson spent nearly half of that amount, $2.1 million, as reported by Open Secrets. Since 2020, the industry has donated $6.6 million to political campaigns. Tyson was the leading corporate donor. One-third of Tyson’s total pollution nationwide was dumped in Nebraska. Between 2018 and 2022, Tyson’s five largest plants in Nebraska discharged over 111 million pounds of pollutants into waterways. Federal regulations currently do not establish any phosphorus limits. Most meat processing facilities in the United States are not subject to current water regulations, making monitoring the exact quantity of toxins being discharged into water impossible. This lack of oversight is a big environmental and public health concern, as unchecked pollution can lead to irreversible damage to ecosystems and harm humans.

Did you know when you buy bleached paper your supporting the polluting of our waterways, ecosystems and human health ? Think every bleached white carton of dairy, non dairy , juice or display boxes paper towels 🧻 or toilet paper or Kleenex etc. Dioxins are produced in the chemical bleach process. Or we can choose unbleached Kraft paper from select brands that are doing the right thing 🙏 My next entrepreneurial CPG project will focus on using Kraft non bleached boxes. Animals on the top of the food chain, such as birds and mammals that eat contaminated fish, face the greatest risks. Last summer, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USF&W) linked dioxin discharges from the bleach kraft mill in Lincoln with the reproductive failure among Penobscot River bald eagles. Reproduction among eagles nesting within roughly two miles of the Lincoln mill has been as low as 40% below the statewide average. USF&W also examined total dioxin contamination of bald eagle blood and eggs, and found levels in unhatched eggs near the Penobscot River exceeded “safe” levels by up to 85 times.
