Are the larger (eg 4680) cylindrical cells more likely to get sidewall dents? Tesla are replacing some Cybertruck battery packs and this was one reason: "some cells may have side dents, which can cause shorting in cells in packs" https://lnkd.in/erSgDCGF We have also noted that the can thickness of the Tesla 4680 cell has been reduced from 0.5 to 0.6mm in Gen 1 cells https://lnkd.in/eW4NhszM to 0.35mm in Gen 2 cells https://lnkd.in/eJ_8ebSY What is really happening here? Is it an issue in pack production, cell production or fundamental cell design? It would be great to understand this and to use that to benefit all of the other 46xx design work. Tesla is set to roll out significant charging improvements for its Cybertruck, addressing early concerns and significantly enhancing its performance at Supercharger stations. The upcoming over-the-air (OTA) software update, expected within weeks, will allow the Cybertruck to add up to 154 miles of range in just 15 minutes. This update, confirmed by Cybertruck lead engineer Wes Morrill, follows earlier promises by Tesla executives to boost charging speed and efficiency. Key enhancements include resolving issues that limited amperage during low state of charge, allowing the Cybertruck to fully utilize the 350A maximum output of V3 Supercharger stalls. Tesla’s 4680 production milestone: The 100 millionth battery cell produced. How did its production increase? 🗓️October 20, 2023 = 20 millionth cell 🗓️June 8, 2024 = 50 millionth cell That's 30M cells in under 8 months. 🗓️September 13, 2024 = 100 millionth cell That's 50M cells in a little over 3 months. In terms of Cybertrucks, that's enough for an average run rate of: 368/day 2,578/week 33,514/quarter 134,280/year Honestly, I would prefer if these batteries with 800V architecture were in the Model 3 and Model Y. Last week we charged Cybertruck with power 404kW in peak. Charging curve is still poor, but I believe it will be after some time upgraded. What’s your opinion about Tesla’s 4680? 🔧 Teardown, assembly and cost analysis – Tesla 4DU Rear Inverter for Tesla Model Y We are currently analyzing the teardown of the 4DU Rear Inverter for the Tesla Model Y, an essential part of the powertrain that transfers energy from the #battery to the car's motor and controls the latter. We discovered that STMicroelectronics continues to supply Tesla with #SiC transistors and that Tesla manufactures some of the key elements of the system. Faced with pressure from the competition in terms of volume and integration, Tesla is not hesitating to optimize volume while improving performance. Inverters are key elements in a #vehicle's #electrification system and are evolving technologically with the use of SiC in power transistors.
