4.9 million #children die every year from preventable diseases. This is unacceptable! New Save the Children International analysis based on UN data, shows that number of #zero-dose children is three times higher in #conflict zones than in the rest of the world and the number of zero-dose children in #African countries is twice as high as the rest of the world. Even more important to have seen African Vaccine Manufacturing Accelerator launch - to increase vaccine manufacturing capacity (and vaccine supply) in Africa, alongside Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance Investment Case launch at yesterday's high-level vaccine forum cohosted by the French Republic, Gavi and African Union, with support by Africa CDC and Team Europe. Read our new Save the Children International "Call for Action: Now is the time to step-up for immunisation, not step away… bringing in 🔈 voices from Save the Children country offices in Indonesia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Somalia, Nigeria and calling for 1. 💰 Ambitious pledges by public and private donors for Gavi - to be able to deliver sustainable and equitable immunisation to all children, especially zero-dose and under-immunised children in its next strategy. (Great to see the early pledges yesterday, esp. the $1.58 bn by the US - but this needs to be scaled up for Gavi to reach its target of $9 bn in new pledges...) 2. For Gavi to refocus its' next strategy - Gavi 6.0. - on: ❗#health system strengthening with a primary health care approach, 🤝 robust partnerships with civil society organizations and communities, 🚩 sharpening its focus on reaching the most vulnerable & marginalised children, (such as in remote settings, in regions affected by the #climate crisis, in #refugee camps/in humanitarian crises) #ForOurFuture https://lnkd.in/g6tw9bQP Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance Wambui Munge Olly Cann Thiago Luchesi Karrar Karrar Duncan Harvey Sheetal Rahi Lookhar Isabelle Persson

This is my highlight of this piece: "In the longer term, the African region must invest in its own vision for a New Public Health Order for Africa, which has five strategic pillars: strengthened public health institutions; strengthened public health workforce; expanded manufacturing of vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutics; increased domestic resources for health security, and respectful and action oriented partnerships within Africa and globally.16 This framework will enable Africa to shift from the current global health model based on aid and charity to a paradigm that is rooted in autonomy and self-sufficiency." In the end: the hand that gives will always be above the hand that receives.

In the BMJ today, Madhukar Pai and I remind the world that we will only be as strong as our weakest link. Following on from the declarations of the ongoing mpox outbreak as a #PHEIC and a #PHECS, we remind all concerned parties that true partnerships NOT charity are required to bring about the impetus required to control this mpox outbreak!

UNICEF Day for Change in the U.K. is December 11. UNICEF, short for the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, is an organization that was created in 1946. Our Health Pooled Fund #SouthSudan delivers essential life-saving drugs across 80% of South Sudan. The programme is working in one of the most challenging logistical environments in the world, facing armed conflict, flooding, and an incomplete road network of which 60% is not accessible during the rainy season. To ensure they have access to life-saving 💉 , HPF provides support to South Sudan’s national immunisation campaign by promoting routine immunisation across 7 out of 10 states. 【November 12 is World Pneumonia Day. 】 Several organizations, including UNICEF and Save the Children, are involved in raising awareness about this topic on World Pneumonia Day. Pneumonia is an infectious disease in which lung inflammation is caused by bacteria or viruses. Symptoms similar to a cough or cold can become severe, and when fluid or pus accumulates in the lungs, breathing may stop for children. Pneumonia is one of the most life-threatening diseases in children (including newborns) worldwide. More children die from severe pneumonia than from malaria or measles; pneumonia is the most common disease caused by disparities socio-economic disparities. Each year, more than one million children are affected by pneumonia, many of them are in 124 low- and middle-income countries, and need medical oxygen, health, and nutrition services to survival. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the lack of equitable access to medical oxygen due to socio-economic disparities was severe. However, pneumonia is vaccine-preventable and can be treated with pharmaceuticals. COVID-19 has fueled the largest continued backslide in childhood vaccination in almost three decades. Creating awareness of and investing in this global problem can prevent deaths of young children, caused by pneumonia, worldwide. Donations through UNICEF or Save the Children may be another way to help. Rotarians Against Malaria is a dedicated team of Rotarians who join forces with fellow Rotarians, local and international organizations, and individuals to combat the spread of Malaria. Our group diligently studies and implements proven methods that effectively reduce malaria cases within a short period of time. Once we achieve success, we strive to expand our efforts on a larger scale. Putting an end to Malaria not only saves countless lives but also plays a crucial role in breaking the cycle of poverty. Shockingly, in 2019 alone, Malaria claimed the lives of 409,000 individuals and caused a staggering 229 million cases worldwide. Tragically, 67% of these deaths were innocent children under the age of 5. Malaria has a devastating impact on education, particularly in African schools. It accounts for half of the missed school days, as children in endemic countries may suffer from multiple bouts of the disease throughout the year. This prevents them from attending school regularly and hampers their ability to learn effectively. Consequently, their future earning potential is severely affected. By keeping children healthy and free from Malaria, we enable parents to go to work without the constant worry of their child falling ill. This, in turn, reduces the need to spend their hard-earned wages on malaria treatments and healthcare expenses. Blood transfusions save lives however recent headlines have highlighted problems of blood shortages in America. The shortfall is noted as due to an increase in demand and shortfall in donations. The problem is not restricted to America but is a global one. Across sub-Saharan #Africa, the lack of blood transfusions and the capacity to store the blood that is donated is having disastrous effects. Many patients are not able to gain timely access due to lack of #donations, poor #storage conditions, and unviable blood due to #haemolysis. At SureChill, we have harnessed our #technology, that is already saving lives in the #VaccineColdChain, to #protect and keep blood viable in the harshest of conditions. Want to find out more?
