Wise heads in business will tell you that you should watch how your customer uses your product - get behind that use case and power it up... So this is a picture of my old friend and colleague DavidPond Consulting Limited MBE setting out on his latest mission to Ukraine tomorrow with a truck he’s just raised the money for on Crowdfunder UK Because David is smart (you don’t end up a naval commodore and the CEO of one of the UK’s most successful sports charities without being smart) David has worked out one of the most effective ways of using Crowdfunder as a tool for #fundraising we’ve seen: Raising and accessing funds fast - For David’s first raise, when he was actually on the ground in Ukraine, early in the war, he was able to get early draw down so the funds were with him swiftly, meaning he could get ambulances from Poland to the warzone and deliver critical care within days. Start small, raise big - He started with a realistic target amount (his first target was £20k) to prove the model, but now his network is established, it’s allowed to raise over £100k for humanitarian aid via Crowdfunder. Do what works again - After the huge success of his first raise - raising over £45k in a matter of days, David created an ‘always on’ crowdfunder, and kept his supporters updated on his success. We saw shots of orphans receiving toys, doctors welcoming medical supplies, field kitchens to make food in the bitter cold. Result: when he wanted to raise funds for a second mission to get more ambulances, his regular supporters were 100% behind him and pledged again. Yesterday he had a £5k donation out of nowhere. Regular donations - David now has supporters who donate every month to his further missions and, because he keeps his Crowdfunder permanently open, while continuing to spread the word about the work he’s doing, people donate even when he’s not actively fundraising. Which is why tomorrow he heads out to #Ukraine again with a brilliant new truck sourced by @mercare garage to deliver aid where it’s needed most. Not everyone has as urgent a need for crisis funds as David, but there are lots of things he has done that other #charities and #NGOs could learn from when fundraising with us. https://lnkd.in/em8zxtsW Best of luck Pondy. Good crowdfunding!

*Mission possible: End Malaria* In these uneasy times, with news channels filled with stories of conflict, hatred and war, it is easy to feel apathy and a sense of helplessness, also on fronts where we can - and have been - making steady progress. Each birthday, I draw attention to one issue - a new one every year - that goes under the radar, but where each of us, in the aggregate, can make a big difference. This year I have decided to highlight and support the fight against #malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases. For many years (at least the last two decades), things have been looking brighter. In 2000 #malariaprevention was designated as a critical target of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). By the target year in 2015, WHO concluded malaria incidence had fallen by 37% globally and death rates by 60%. The same year, scientists even suggested mosquitos could be genetically modified to eradicate the disease carte blanche. Now, however, this cause of death is on the rise. The main reason: increasingly adaptive and resistant species of malaria-carrying mosquitoes. Malaria and other mosquito-borne viruses are one of the main causes of premature deaths globally, causing about 620,000 deaths each year. More worryingly, one particular malaria-carrying species of mosquito, Anopheles stephensi, is developing resistance to common preventive measures, such as insecticides. Moreover, the mosquitos are becoming better adapted to survive the dry season – and even thrive in areas formerly believed to be safe from malaria, such as coastal cities and the continental interior. This means a large new population (researchers have estimated an additional 126 million people) is becoming susceptible to malaria, especially vulnerable children under the age of 5 in the poorer regions of sub-Saharan Africa, threatening to undermine all progress indicators on malaria prevention. This dramatic evolution is seriously undermining the UN #sustainabledevelopmentgoals #3, target 3.3.: "By 2030, end the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and neglected tropical diseases and combat hepatitis, water-borne diseases and other communicable diseases". This is why I believe the work of The Against Malaria Foundation is more important than ever. Through collaborating with each country’s national malaria program and other partner organizations to distribute protective nets in mass distribution campaigns, they have provided more than 200 million nets to millions of households in more than 8 malaria-endemic countries in Africa. These nets have likely prevented more than 150,000 deaths by malaria and other communicable diseases. I challenge you to join me in supporting their important mission: To end death by malaria!! And I suggest you do it annually, through either Giving What We Can: https://lnkd.in/dzKzJCgi or the Norwegian charity Gi Effektivt: https://lnkd.in/dNibdZC8

This is my highlight of this piece: "In the longer term, the African region must invest in its own vision for a New Public Health Order for Africa, which has five strategic pillars: strengthened public health institutions; strengthened public health workforce; expanded manufacturing of vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutics; increased domestic resources for health security, and respectful and action oriented partnerships within Africa and globally.16 This framework will enable Africa to shift from the current global health model based on aid and charity to a paradigm that is rooted in autonomy and self-sufficiency." In the end: the hand that gives will always be above the hand that receives.

In the BMJ today, Madhukar Pai and I remind the world that we will only be as strong as our weakest link. Following on from the declarations of the ongoing mpox outbreak as a #PHEIC and a #PHECS, we remind all concerned parties that true partnerships NOT charity are required to bring about the impetus required to control this mpox outbreak!

Celebrating 20 Years of Giving: Thank You, Blood Donors! Today, on World Blood Donor Day, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the millions of voluntary blood donors who have contributed to the health and well-being of countless individuals worldwide. This year's theme, "20 years of celebrating giving: thank you blood donors!" reminds us of the remarkable achievements over the past two decades and highlights the ongoing challenges we must address. In Africa, blood transfusions remain a critical regimen for treating sickle cell patients and others in need. However, chronic blood shortages, a high prevalence of transfusion-transmissible infections (TTIs), a lack of national blood transfusion services, and difficulties recruiting and retaining voluntary nonremunerated donors pose significant challenges. Addressing these issues should be a priority to ensure an uninterrupted supply of safe blood and blood products, particularly in Sub-Saharan African countries. The disparity in blood donation is stark: while countries in the high-income group collect 40% of global contributions, they only account for 16% of the worldwide population. In contrast, low-income and lower-middle-income countries, which represent 48% of the global population, collect only 26% of the donations. We call on everyone to contribute to bridging this gap. Regular blood donation is vital for ensuring safe blood transfusions for all, especially in regions with significant deficits. You can make a difference. Donate blood today and help save lives! #WorldBloodDonorDay #ThankYouBloodDonors #BloodDonation #Health #SickleCell #Africa #GlobalHealth #GiveBloodSaveLives

Today marks World Malaria Day, a global call to action against this devastating disease. Despite progress, malaria still affects millions of people globally. Past health reports revealed Malaria as one of the main causes of child morbidity in Sudan. Around 75 per cent of all child deaths are registered due to preventable diseases, such as diarrhea, Malaria, and pneumonia. This year, there is expected to be an exponential increase in fatalities due to 70-80 per cent of the hospitals in conflict-affected areas no longer being functional. Moreover, 65 per cent of the population lacks access to healthcare. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗮 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗼 𝗻𝗲𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀! We are desperate to provide our communities with as many mosquito nets as possible. Could you donate just £18.00 today to give a family two mosquito nets to save children’s lives? Together, we can play our part in eradicating this deadly disease from Darfur. Lugei Foundation, the Science of Changing lives message today is for Donors to work with us and fund Hepatitis elimination and for governments and policy makers to prioritize Viral Hepatitis, take action and increase access to testing, and treatment to those who need it. Eliminating Hepatitis is achievable, as we have all the vaccines, testing, and treatment to get there: now, we need to Act together. We continue our efforts to contribute to the prevention and control of viral Hepatitis as it is in the theme of this year's #WorldHepatitisDay: it is time for action TEST, VACCINATE , TREAT.
