Why is NASA Tracking Seaweed from Space? | Goddard Space Flight Center FriendsofNASA.org: Something strange has been happening to the beaches across the Caribbean in recent years. Large amounts of a brown seaweed–called Sargassum–have been washing up on shorelines. In the open ocean, Sargassum is essential habitat, but can cause a whole host of issues when it washes up on Caribbean coastlines. So where is this seaweed coming from? And how is NASA tracking it? As consultants to NASA, we’re uncovering how fungi can aid in building extraterrestrial habitats and terraforming distant planets, inspired by the resilience of fungal networks detailed in my book, “Mycelium Running: How Mushrooms Can Help Save the World.” From breaking down asteroid regolith to pioneering mycotecture with durable fungal materials, our research holds promise for sustainable space habitation. Through meticulous experimentation, we’ve identified adaptable fungal species like oyster mushrooms, showcasing their potential to thrive in harsh space environments and pave the way for a future where fungi play a vital role in shaping the cosmos. Fungi are FANTASTIC and extremely versatile. My current interests are primarily in foraging (responsibly) with my husband for mushrooms (as big as my head!) that I can cook and eat or make into a tea. But I expect that as we continue to learn more about the world of fungi, my interests will also expand, and that's exciting! February 29, 2024: Leap Day! According to NASA, leap years happen because of a “mismatch between the calendar year and Earth’s orbit.” While we typically think of one year lasting 365 days, it actually takes approximately 365 days and 6 hours for the Earth to orbit the sun. One thing is certain: this is not volcanic sulfur. And, as far as I know, all sedimentary native sulfur deposits on Earth were formed with the participation of sulfate-reducing bacteria.
