Lower Saxony – Scotland Joint Forum 2024: The Jubilee Edition DAY I: PANEL DISCUSSIONS Today we have the pleasure of introducing the second of the planned panel discussions, which will focus on the scientific outlook for the European Union. Panel II: “Horizon Europe and Beyond: How Do We Best Position Our Researchers for the Future?” In the wake of Brexit, Scottish researchers faced the challenge of navigating the absence of Horizon funding, a crucial source for research and innovation provided by the European Union. However, the UK's recent association with Horizon Europe, effective January 2024, presents a significant opportunity for collaborative efforts between Lower Saxony and Scotland in the academic sphere. Horizon Europe stands out as an excellent funding framework, providing an apparatus for competitive scientific research. The existing network of higher education institutions between Scotland and Lower Saxony can be best used to position researchers from both regions to craft successful project proposals within an international context. This is especially pertinent in fields such as renewable energies and marine science, life sciences, security, mobility, and cultural heritage. The panel will consider the imperative to expand perspectives beyond Horizon Europe, urging exploration of additional opportunities at both regional and German-UK levels. This exploration is essential when addressing inquiries concerning strategic positioning and securing funding for scientific projects and initiatives amidst the current sociopolitical landscape. I am wrapping up my research period at Linnaeus University! 🇸🇪 ➡ 🇮🇹 After these 6 months, I learned that we need to dare to create a momentum for change. New worlds are already in the making. To perform them we need radical co-presence, we need each other, we need to transparently make mistakes but also celebrate the wins. We need care for ourselves, our organisations, communities and more than humans. To survive we need to be able to stand on different legs (not just two as in a human form but more like an octopus), we need to be creative and try out even in the face of uncertainty. Finally, we need to communicate what we do with openness and courage to engage new allies. 🐙 Ps: the picture was taken during the last workshop I held with local cooperatives Alnarp's Farm @circlecentre Lund and Lund Matvarukooperativ within an event on cooperatives ways of organising and community owned assets of the Institute for Degrowth Studies in Malmö. I have some SWEET news to share! I am very exited that I have been awarded a Veni grant from the NWO/ ZonMW for my SUGAR-CART project! SUGAR-CART stands for ‘Specific Use of Glycosylation Adaptations to Reinforce Chimeric Antigen Receptor T cells’. Every cell in our body is decorated with a layer of sugars via a process called glycosylation. These sugars have important functions in signaling, but to date little is known about the impact of glycosylation on CAR T cell responses. With this project I aim to investigate which sugar decorations are promoting CAR T cell responses, with the ultimate goal to design a glycosylation-modified CAR T cell with improved efficacy.

Yet, in the intricate world of prostate cancer screening, the answers are not always black and white. Our recent study dives into this nuanced landscape.
