Summarizing the significance of my PhD research in one minute. (From my interview as an invited guest speaker at the last Entomological Society of America annual conference). The importance of clear scientific communication cannot be overstated. Here are 10 reasons to communicate effectively as a Scientist: 1. How my PhD developed me at a personal level A PhD equips you with many useful skills and expertise such as critical reasoning, data presentation and collaboration. While all these are not only necessary to complete your PhD they will also empower you to find employment after you have graduated. What we tend to forget is that the PhD journey does much more for you than attaining these professional skills, as it also gives you the possibility to develop a lot at a personal level: - being comfortable with being uncomfortable - being exposed to and learning about different cultures from colleagues - having the chance to live abroad in a different social environment - developing self-belief of my capabilities to master most things in life with little previous knowledge about them while still being humble - learning to self-reflect on my behaviour and actions Like me, you probably ended your PhD as a different person to the one who began all those years ago, and I am grateful for that possibility to develop into who I am today. Takeaway from my PhD- Networking, the most spoken topic of PhD 🤯 In the early years of PhD, the pressure to not lag behind was overwhelming. Being in a foreign country intensified my sense of isolation, leading me to retreat into a shell of loneliness and homesickness. Ever since I began volunteering for activities outside of my PhD, I have had the chance to meet incredible individuals, engage in meaningful discussions, and establish valuable connections, which made me feel more worthy than in academia. Volunteering outside academia is a constructive way to broaden your knowledge, explore new fields, and improve your time management skills. #phd #research #networking
