The recent release of a new drought-resilient sweet potato variety called Vanuavatu in Fiji highlights the importance of global collaboration for food and nutrition security. Pacific Community-SPC CePaCT sourced the variety from the International Potato Center (CIP) in Peru to diversify Pacific crops and boost resilient agriculture. Conserving and distributing #cropdiversity through partnerships with the International Plant Treaty, the Crop Trust, and CGIAR genebanks underpins the global agricultural capacity to innovate, adapt, and thrive.

Investment in farmers is crucial. Europe's farmers in particular face a dual challenge: delivering sustainable, high-yielding crops amidst a dwindling supply of healthy seeds. Currently, advancements in agricultural science offer hope. Hybrid breeding, for instance, leverages genome mapping, and creates disease-resistant, climate-resilient seeds that can enable global shipment and storage, ensuring staple crop supply. Governments and agencies must facilitate access to agricultural innovation as it's this support that can secure not only Europe's food supply but that of the world's, as well as future generations' well-being. #FoodSecurity #SustainableAgriculture #Farming

Talk of influence! Earlier this month, the African Food Fellowship hosted officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI) to share insights on the development of the 5th Strategic Plan for Agriculture Transformation (PSTA5). The session, which was graced by the Director General of Planning at MINAGRI Dr Chantal Ingabire, served as a platform for Fellows to contribute ideas into the new strategy, which is now at an advanced stage of formulation. The PSTA5 will guide Rwanda’s priorities in the agricultural sector for the next five years, until 2029. Unlike previous editions, PSTA5 is the first of its kind drafted with a food systems approach at the core, thereby calling for multi-sectoral interventions to achieve a resilient and sustainable agri-food system. According to Dr. Ingabire, the country’s new agriculture transformation strategy was drafted with vision 2050 in mind and is designed to catalyse the agriculture sector to create wealth where farmers are more professional and market oriented. Rwanda Food Fellows are keen on leveraging the avenues provided by the new strategy to tackle prevailing challenges to agriculture, ranging from low productivity and post-harvest losses to high stunting rates and malnutrition.
