In order to be a successful leader or manager, it's important to demonstrate executive spine when interacting with higher-ups. This means having the courage to uphold values, principles and make sound, ethical decisions despite pressure. By showing unwavering commitment and conviction, not only do we earn the respect of senior leadership, but we also ensure that critical decisions are made in the best interest of the organization. In long term, this helps in building a culture of transparency and accountability.

Immediate past President for Queenstown Inner Wheel 2023-2024 Passionate Community Member and former Chairperson of the National Association of Women in Construction, Queenstown Lakes Satellite Chapter.
It’s the little things, the details. When someone remembers your name, or asks how your recent trip was or notices your new haircut. It shows that they have listened to you, noticed you and genuinely care. After an amazing leadership event with James Laughlin in June I implemented a few new things into my day - one was taking the time to journal each night. A simple practice that I have now done for 78 days straight, I’m currently on my second notebook. Journaling can have wonderful benefits professionally and personally. Reflecting on decisions you’ve made, how you handled a situation and how you would do things differently. Acknowledging the here and now, staying present and appreciative for the things in your life today. Setting goals for the future, tomorrow, next week, next year. It helps individuals manage stress, gain self-awareness, and make informed decisions, making it a valuable tool for both personal life and leadership roles. I thanked James when I saw him last week and told him that I had been using his notebooks from the seminar. Today I came home to find a wee parcel on my door - three new notebooks to continue my journey. Leadership is many things. But so often, it’s in the little things. Thank you James & Team.

‘Regenerative Leadership’ can be another meaningless buzzword if we’re not careful. But from a management perspective, it means nurturing all the different factors that go into supporting the all-around health of an individual, a team and an organization.

Yesterday we wrapped up our quarterly strategic meeting at Swift. As a small, owner founded company, it’s taken us a minute to get here, but this is the leadership cadence we’ve gotten to, and the one that I would suggest every small independent company would put into place: Quarterly 2-Day leadership off sites with an agenda that has room to breathe and time to connect. We caught three major misalignments in the beautiful space between agenda items. That feed into Quarterly department strategic sessions that align with the recalibration work of the leadership team has joined forces on That inform Quarterly individual performance and goal setting reviews to ensure that everyone is rowing in the same direction. To further an analogy related to water: Think of this as a river of information. For us, this order of meetings represents the right information at the headwaters flowing through the organization without dams or diversions.

We roleplay all the time. Quite regularly, in our leadership meetings, one person will share a plan, and someone else, will challenge if the message is the right approach for the intended audience. To deal with this, we will then roleplay the messaging. We play out the scenario. Sometimes the message changes. Sometimes it stays the same. Sometimes it means we changw the whole approach and decide not to move forward. When you are planning for sales conversations, why would you not do the same?

🚨All signs point to it being time that we shatter the cookie cutter… @ NALP’s 2024 Annual Education Conference, Volta consultant Juliet Aiken, PhD (She/Her) spoke about the exclusivity of traditional hiring practices on a panel. More specifically, the discussion underlined the way that these methods leave out diverse, non-traditional candidates. And unsurprisingly, there’s a lot more to say. If you missed her session, or are interested in hearing about the import of thoughtfully designing and auditing your organizations’ talent management processes, check out her follow-up video below. 🗣️“If your hiring, promoting, and training is not aligned with what you say you value, you’re not going to get the outcomes that you want.”
Set yourself up for success by …. Promoting leaders not experts It is not just your hiring processes that you need to think through carefully and intentionally. You have to take that same level of intentionality to your promotional processes. What do you really want out of your leaders? If you promote only on business generation or on the ability to get the work done, will you get what you want out of the people that are supposed to lead others in your organization? Do you want real leadership? Do you want an inclusive climate? What you promote on is what you are going to get. And if what you are hiring and promoting and training on is not aligned with what you say that you value, you are not going to get the outcomes that you want out of your organization. Take that intentionality and apply it to developing each individual system, recruiting, hiring, promotion, training, and development to ensure that you are actually capturing and reflecting the things that you need at each position, at each level in your organization.
