The #NextGen project, €7.6 million funding from the EU’s Horizon Europe programme and delivered by a 21-member consortium (EU & USA) e.g. clinical research organisations, universities, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and professional associations to integrate multiple sources of data incl. genetics and train AI models that will support personalised prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases (CVD's). CVD the leading cause of death globally (18m/ year), in the EU one in three deaths and at a cost of 2% of Europe’s GDP, disability, absence from work, premature retirement, and absenteeism. #HIRO will be developing a privacy preserving data space that allows the stakeholders to share data and an AI model serving platform that enables models sharing, training and serving. Data spaces and AI are at the heart of the European data economy, and building those tools for the medical sector is far more complex and challenging then for any other Industry vertical. The title of this article is misleading and dangerous. We need to do more, here’s why: -Let’s start with a positive: 97% of trials are now reporting on race and/or ethnicity Unfortunately, there’s not much more to celebrate. -Trials still have a vast majority of white participants at 76.7% -Black participants make up only 14.1% -This is “slightly higher” than 2020. -Hispanic and Asian participant numbers went down -Considering the Hispanic population of the U.S is 18.9%, this alone, is very bad. If that’s an improvement, then we’re really setting the bar low. Clinical trials (especially Phase 3) offer real and valuable healthcare, with the potential for breakthrough treatment and constant health monitoring. I think a more realistic title for this piece is: “CLINICAL TRIAL INCLUSIVITY: DATA SHOWS WE STILL HAVE A LOT TO DO” We need to do a LOT better. AI can help, but that’s for another day. Lip, Medical Advisor for Idoven, will collaborate to launch this platform. 🔍 At Idoven, we're excited about our role in shaping the future commercialization of the project. The #HorizonEU WISDOM project aims to improve the treatment and diagnosis of patients by developing novel AI-based tools to provide early diagnosis and predict the progression of chronic immune-mediated diseases. In order to access the volume of good-quality data needed to create such AI-based tools, fourteen partners consisting of academic, industry, and patient advocacy groups from all over Europe have formed the WISDOM consortium.
