Happy Freedom Day! Juneteenth, or Freedom Day, is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery. The day marks when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure all enslaved people be freed. As a reminder, our offices are closed today in observance and will reopen on Thursday, June 20.

Juneteenth On June 19, 1865 the Union Army arrived in Texas and notified Texas officials that slavery was officially over. Even though the institution of slavery had existed for millennia, our nation’s birth happened at a time that world consciousness finally began to see it as unacceptable —thank God! Imagine being born in a time when slavery was just a part of life? How we have grown as a planet. And each generation will continue to grow. Ending the institution of slavery in America came at the cost of hundreds of thousands of lives, but it was the price that the supporters of slavery required. And it was the price anti-slavery soldiers paid…a necessary sacrifice for ending an evil institution that existed for thousands of years in world history at-large. #freedom #antislavery #EmancipationDay On this, I do have a theory about how our future decendants will judge first world countries for outsourcing to less developed nations for cheaper labor. Mark my words. Today’s world will be judged by tomorrow’s world for it.

Defund the police, defund the military, end militarism in our communities and abroad, invest in collective care. These are just some approaches the Feminist Peace Initiative — led by MADRE, GRASSROOTS GLOBAL JUSTICE Alliance, and Women Cross DMZ — presents in the report: "A Vision for a Feminist Peace: Building a Movement-Driven Foreign Policy." https://bit.ly/485Kv0s

On this day, we commemorate the courage and sacrifice of those who fought on D-Day, June 6, 1944. The beaches of Normandy witnessed an extraordinary display of courage and commitment as Allied soldiers started a vital offensive against fascist tyranny. Many of those brave troops came from North Carolina, and their dedication and valor helped to make this historic mission a success. D-Day is more than just a historical event; it is a stark warning of the stakes when democracy is threatened. Today, as we see the consolidation of worldwide fascist authoritarian movements, the lessons of D-Day are more relevant. These groups undermine the basic principles of democracy, encouraging hatred and division rather than unity and freedom. My work with the Bridging Divides Initiative includes researching, monitoring, and analyzing authoritarian and antidemocratic movements. The sacrifices made by troops on D-Day are a source of hope and a call to action for all of us. We must be watchful, defend democratic values, and ensure that the liberties for which they fought so bravely are preserved for future generations. In North Carolina, a state with a strong history of service and sacrifice, we are inspired by those who have come before us. Their legacy urges us to resist oppression and work ceaselessly for a society governed by democracy, fairness, and equality. Let us honor their legacy by recommitting to the ongoing struggle for liberty and democracy. #DDay #NeverForget #Democracy #NorthCarolina #Veterans #Freedom #BridgeDivides
