“62% of US workers say their well-being is the same or worse than six months ago,” finds a new report from The Conference Board, despite significant investments in employee well-being programs across the country. True commitment to well-being goes far beyond many surface-level wellness programs and instead requires “embedding it into the business strategy and culture,” as Rita Meyerson states in this article. When employees have a felt-sense of belonging and psychological safety, they can truly thrive in the workplace, instead of just surviving. Every organisation wants Big Things Fast! But few know how to achieve it. We bring the how and help you unlock the human capital within. Simple, not easy. Thinker. Doer. Author. Keynote Speaker. Follow for more insights.
I posted a poll yesterday asking: If you asked over 120,000 employees across the globe 🌍 "What would you change about your workplace to make it better?" The votes are in and the answers were: 🥉 Wellbeing 10% 🥈 Pay and Benefits 28% 🥇 Engagement or Culture 62% Which reflects the actual results from the Gallup State of the Global Workplace 2023 Report - see graphic below. And gven that 85% of the respondees were the ones who were already "quiet quitting" you have to ask why organisations and the #executivesandmanagement within, along with the #humanresources departments, aren't focusing on the right things 🔍 ❌ #linkedin and the business magazines are awash with "Wellbeing". Blah Blah Blah. Lots of virtue signalling about how "We take care of our employees" 🤢 I saw one place that had organised a "puppy stroking" day 🐶 , fresh fruit baskets 🍎 on a Friday morning, even a massive revolving floor as a healthy walking machine while standing at your desk🚶♂️ "Our employee wellbeing is No.1 on our agenda" said Brenda from #HR. "But Brenda, I thought DEI was No.1" "That was last week". 🤦♂️ ❌ Pay and benefits is believed to be what all employees want. "But we can't afford that" said Bob the CFO "I know, let's give them puppies, fresh fruit and a long walk instead" said Erica the CHRO. 🤦♂️ ✅ "What about improving our culture and employee engagement?" suggested Susan, the wise NED. "Our culture is just fine and employees have psychological safety, they can speak up anytime they wish, plus we send out a pulse survey every year" replied Steve the CEO. 🤦♂️ See the problem? 👀 Luckily the solution is simple. Simple, not easy. Where organisations have learned news skills and adopted best practice for engaging their employees, those organisations have a 50% increase in engagement above the global norm. 50%❗❗ Do you know what that does for your ROI? 📈 ✅ Reduced sickness and absence ✅ Better customer experience ✅ Increased staff advocacy ✅ Increased retention ✅ Increased revenue ✅ Profit growth This is why we created ACT Culture Shift™ - a proven skills capability uplift that puts people at the heart of the solution, and arms you with the ability to shift your culture in the required direction. This is our most rapid programme to enable the culture shift organisations want, bringing increased clarity and alignment. Employee well-being, DEI, and exceptional employee experience are all BAD for business! Where is the evidence? Yet, companies refuse to prioritize organizational efforts and investments in those initiatives. On the contrary, they reserve budgets for “employee wellness litigation!!” How absurd and counterproductive. This post is inspired by a series of exchanges from Elizabeth J. Sandler’s post over the weekend about the reported death by suicide of a staffer at a major Investment Bank due to overwork—her post in the comments. Imagine you are the CEO of a company whose business practices directly affect an outcome of this magnitude. How can we, in any situation, prioritize profit over people? I wouldn’t want to have that in my consciousness. I know we all have tremendous pressures demanding forever better results. And that an argument can be made that maintaining profits can sustain the many families relying on each employee’s job. That’s why I go back to the original point. Where is the evidence that employee well-being and all the other initiatives designed to enhance employee lives at work (and outside) are bad for business? There is none. Many of these initiatives cost nothing other than commitment and a different mindset. We need industry-leading companies to take a stand and create systemic change so that the rest of the companies follow. We all must do our part by asking for, leading, or promoting these practices. From our side, we will continue to create awareness of what is possible in HR and provide actionable guidance on how to achieve it. Let’s create the mindset needed. All of us. #BWC24 My takeaways for Day 1: A Systematic Approach To Promoting Employee Wellbeing I would say that from the discussion with Lesley MacDonald and Corrina Hill of BC Hydro, what struck me the most was that they prioritize the health and well-being of employees in their organization. They created a picture for me that safety and wellbeing is an integral part of their business strategy. It got me thinking of how vital it is to have a diverse and inclusive workplace to create a safe and healthy environment for all. Lesley spoke with such passion on how their organization keeps pushing forward; the clear vision of what can be in the future and the values that shapes their work culture. One thing that really captured my attention is their organization’s commitment to including every employee, which is really a key part of diversity and inclusion. Also, they aspire to have a workforce that reflects the diversity of the customers and communities served by their organization, which I think is amazing. That said, it emphasizes the importance of organizational values aligned with the workforce. Lesley emphasized that everyone should share common values within an organization. Corrina also emphasized the results of an employee engagement survey that emphasized a safe and diverse work culture. Having good relationships with other employees, confidence in declining unsafe jobs, and the workplace being a place where somebody is allowed to be themselves were examples of having a safe and diverse work culture. This resonated with me because I think we all yearn for a safe space at work, a place where our diversity isn't only accepted but is celebrated and is not rejected. Another speaker, Kevin Berube, mentioned that psychological health and safety is a valuable thing in the workplace because it makes employees feel safe in their work environment. If employees feel safe to be themselves, to be noticed, and to be treated with recognition, it creates an amazingly healthy work culture. That feeling of being safe and included is so important for the psychological health and wellbeing of all the individuals in an organization. After all, an inclusive workplace is one where every individual feels valued and safe to work to their full potential.

The target is shifting when it comes to retaining top talent. In a study mentioned in this article, 87% of these employees said they would consider jumping ship from a company that disregards employee wellbeing, an increase from 77% just a year ago. And we can't rely on impersonal corporate programs to meet this need, It's up to leaders to display empathy and model balance that will make the greatest impact.
