As a fundraiser, understanding what motivates your donors is key to your success. Recently, a client asked if their appeal was "too emotional" (as members of their board had suggested). My response was simple: the founders of nonprofits were motivated to launch their organizations because of their emotional response to the need. While those who drive the mission out to the public tend to be less emotional and more focused on measuring effectiveness over time, donors are still motivated by particular stories and real-life needs.
