"Housing First is a proven model for addressing homelessness that prioritizes access to permanent, stable housing, linked with voluntary services as needed. Housing First recognizes that stable housing is a prerequisite for effective psychiatric and substance abuse treatment and for improving quality of life. Once stably housed, individuals are better able to take advantage of wrap-around services – to help support housing stability, employment, and recovery. Without stable housing, attaining these goals becomes much more difficult." Hoosiers across race and place deserve to live in a state that supports their ability to have a home and a community. Yet, as our Herbert Simon Family Foundation Policy Fellow Sarah highlights, the recent Supreme Court ruling has emboldened states and cities to use punitive approaches to address homelessness rather than compassion. In our latest blog, Sarah shares her personal experience with homelessness, and what steps we can take to ensure that all Hoosiers have a place to call home, during our current housing and cost of living crisis. 🚨🏡🚫 Johnson v. Grants Pass is the most important case on homelessness in DECADES. Homelessness is increasing across the country as more households struggle to make ends meet. Rent is too expensive, wages are too low, and we have seen decades of failed housing policies. Fines and arrest records make it even harder for people to get and keep a roof over their heads. The real solution is providing access to housing they can afford and the support services they need to become stable. Handcuffs do not get anyone closer to housing. #JohnsonVGrantsPass #homelessness #homeless #housing Learn more: https://bit.ly/3xmp8dv

In recognizing the importance of safe and secure housing for children, it becomes critical to address homelessness and housing instability to ensure that every child has the opportunity to grow and thrive. A safe and secure home environment is crucial for the well-being and success of children. A stable home provides a foundation for their physical, emotional, and cognitive development. By investing in organizations like TPCS that offer affordable housing initiatives and supportive services, we can create environments where children can reach their full potential and contribute to the strength of our communities, thus breaking the cycle of homelessness. #endhomelessness #essexcounty #homelessshelter
