📖Research Reads Friday👓 New in research this week from the Journal of Urban Health: Housing Australian children: A snapshot of health inequities in the first 2000 days. Housing is a critical social determinant of children’s health. While individual pathways between housing and health are well evidenced, there has been less attention on the co-occurrence of housing disadvantages. The researchers sought to identify typologies of children’s housing disadvantage and describe the health inequities they generate. The findings in the report further support the case for early intervention strategies that account for children’s housing circumstances. Q Shelter congratulates our community housing provider (CHP) members Bric Housing and Coast2Bay Housing Group, as well as the City of Moreton Bay Council, on a partnership which will see more community housing provided for the region. Bric Housing and Coast2Bay have been granted 50-year 'peppercorn' leases on existing council land in Caboolture and Morayfield, allowing them to develop and manage additional much-needed social housing properties for locals. With the Moreton Bay region continuing to see increased rates of homelessness and unmet housing need, we congratulate Bric Housing, Coast2Bay and the Council for their leadership in working to find solutions to deliver more safe and affordable homes quickly. 🌞Thank you Townsville!🙌 Jo, Floyd, Rhiannon and Kym from our Sector Capacity team had a great time visiting several Q Shelter members and other housing and homelessness support providers in Townsville last week. It was a chance to catch up with our colleagues on the fantastic work they're doing, while also introducing the WellNow Wellbeing Framework and suite of resources for positive workplace wellbeing and culture. https://bit.ly/4faOOuJ The team visited Lisa and staff at Sharehouse Youth Programs Inc and heard about the amazing things that have been done to develop the workplace culture and support the wellbeing and development of the team. The Sharehouse team have even created a Wellbeing Room for staff and young people to use as needed. Our team also spent some time at Family Emergency Accommodation Townsville (FEAT), sharing the WellNow resources and how they can be introduced to the workplace. Finally, the team was welcomed by the staff at Vinnies QLD Homeless Hostel, where Celia took them on a tour of the facility. Over the past four years, Celia has turned the men's hostel into a flourishing and vibrant space for the residents and staff. It now boasts a full-time, in-house chef, air-conditioned spaces and an absolutely beautiful garden. A big thank you to everyone in Townsville who took time out to meet with the team, we greatly appreciate it! If your organisation would like to have a workshop with our Sector Capacity team about how you can implement the WellNow Wellbeing Framework and resources in your workplace, please get in touch! Email: workforce-connect@qshelter.asn.au The WellNow project is delivered by Homelessness Queensland and Q Shelter through funding from the Queensland Government. It aims to support the attraction and retention of the housing and homelessness workforce in Queensland through improved wellbeing in workplaces, with content of WellNow framework and resources informed though extensive consultation with the sector. #WellNow #WorkplaceWellbeing #Wellbeing #HomeMatters #housing #homelessness #Townsville

📝Research participation opportunity: Impacts of workplace trauma and psychosocial hazards on frontline workers in social housing and homelessness services in Australia💻 A new research project funded by Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI) is seeking to inform improvements in the prevention and management of workplace trauma in the homelessness and social housing sectors. The project researchers from Swinburne University of Technology, UNSW and University of Tasmania are calling for participants for their online survey, seeking input from frontline staff in social housing and homelessness services across a variety of roles. The survey take around 20-25 minutes to complete, and the questions relate to the kinds of negative incidents staff can encounter, what staff believe works well, the supports people currently have at work, and what needs to be improved.
