🌟The Legacy of Paris Olympic 2024 Congratulations! Paris was buzzing with excitement on the successful completion of the #ParisOlympics2024! France celebrated with an elaborate event, marking a triumphant moment for the host nation. The 2024 Olympics cemented Paris' status as a premier global destination, leaving a lasting legacy of sportsmanship and sustainability. The 2024 Paris Olympics had demonstrated the highest levels of #GenderEquality in the history of the modern Olympic Games. For the first time, there has been an equal number of male and female athletes competing, with a 50-50 gender split across all events. All 329 medal events had both a men's and women's competition, eliminating any single-gender events. The Paris 2024 logo designed by Sylvain Boyer features the female personification of the French Republic, Marianne, which is the first time the Olympic logo has included a woman, with the intention to promote gender equality. The International Olympic Committee – IOC has mandated that all future host cities must achieve gender parity in athlete participation. Overall, the 2024 Paris Olympics are set to be a landmark event for gender equality in sports. Let's celebrate a monumental achievement set to be reached at the upcoming Olympic Games Paris 2024: for the first time in Olympic history, there will be full gender parity on the field of play. The principle of gender equality is enshrined in the Olympic Charter, which states that the role of the IOC is to encourage and support the promotion of women in sport at all levels and in all structures with a view to implementing the principle of equality of men and women. But the road has been long, and it is only in 1981 that women were sworn as IOC members, with the co-option of Flor Isava-Fonseca and Pirjo Häggman. Flor Isava-Fonseca was then the first woman to be elected on the IOC Executive Board in 1990, and in 1997, Anita DeFrantz was elected as first female IOC Vice-President. On the sport side, the participation of female athletes has grown steadily over the years. While no women participated in the first Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, and only 22 women took part, constituting 2.2 per cent of the 997 competitors at the Olympic Games in Paris in 1900, women’s participation had grown to 13 per cent at the Games in Tokyo 1964 and 23 per cent at Los Angeles 1984. After 1991, any new sport included on the Olympic programme had to have events for women, and London 2012 allowed women to compete in all the sports on the Olympic programme for the first time. As the 2024 Olympics open in Paris today, it is important to recognize the historic significance of the first Gender Equal Olympics! This includes a more gender-balanced sports program, with 28 out of 32 sports fully gender equal. A more gender-balanced number of medal events, with the Paris 2024 schedule comprising 152 women’s events, 157 men’s events and 20 mixed-gender events. This means that more than half of all the medal events at Paris 2024 will be open to female athletes. "Significant efforts have also been made to ensure that women’s and men’s sports events are scheduled fairly over the 16 days of the Olympic Games. We have come a long way and will go all the way. Women on the field of play have certainly come a long way, as can be seen in the graphic embedded in this post by the International Olympic Committee – IOC, released in anticipation of March 8th (International Women's Day). This is truly something to celebrate, but it's also an opportunity to reflect and take stock of the hurdles that had to be overcome. The transformation needs to continue off the field of play, where key decisions are made in sport. It is a moment to look forward to more progress, as only when the governance systems and structures reflect society's true gender and diversity mix at all levels will we collectively achieve a gold medal. WOMEN IN OLYMPICS In 1896, women were completely excluded from the first modern Olympics. The Games, in the eyes of their founder Pierre de Coubertin, were a festival of masculine athletics. In 1900, women competed in certain unofficial events at the Paris Games and even took home medals. Charlotte Cooper, a tennis player, became the first female Olympic champion. Gradual Inclusion (1912-1970s) • Throughout the early 20th century, there were progressively more women's events, but attendance stayed low. • Sports were frequently viewed as unfeminine, and women's physical health was a worry.  Fight for Equality (1970s–1990s) • The campaign for greater gender equality in sports was sparked by the growth of the women's rights movement. •In the 1970s and 1980s, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) started to include a greater number of women's events. Current Developments (2000s–Present) • In 1991, new Olympic sports had to incorporate women's events due to a regulation modification. Women competed in every event for the first time at the London Games in 2012. • The ratio of female athletes is still rising, and the IOC is still dedicated to promoting gender equality. Obstacles Remain  • Despite notable advancements, several sports, such as Nordic combined and synchronised swimming, are still exclusive to one gender. •Two issues that are still being worked on are pay parity and media attention to women's sports. Paris 2024 will mark a historic moment in Olympic history with the first-ever Olympics to achieve full Gender Parity, showcasing an equal number of men and women athletes! Since the Olympic games in Athens 1896 where women participation stood at 0%, there has been remarkable progression. In the early 50s, women's participation increased to just 10%, then to 20% by the late 70s. It wasn't until 2004 that we began to witness a more balanced representation, with women athletes constituting 40% of participants. This got me thinking about gender parity in the work force and particularly the area I recruit for in sales. In 2024 women in sales roles represent 39% of the workforce in EMEA, and this percentage has only increased by 3% over the past decade. As we celebrate progress towards equality in sports, it's important to reflect on the strides made in other industries. The largest stage for international competition kicks off today with the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony in Paris, and we are rooting for #TeamUSA! As we count down the hours to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, let's celebrate a remarkable milestone these games have already achieved! The Paris 2024 Olympics will feature an equal number of female and male athletes, marking the first time since the modern Olympics began that true gender equality has been reached in sports! In fact, all 32 Olympic sports will achieve full gender parity, with 5,250 slots allocated to each sex. This development represents the culmination of a century-long progression in women participation in the Games. The path to this point has been steady but gradual. When Paris first hosted the Olympics in 1900, only 22 women competed. By the 1996 Atlanta Games, women participated in 26 sports, making up 34% of competitors. Tokyo 2020 saw women in 33 sports, and Paris 2024 now completes this trajectory with an equal gender split across all Olympic disciplines.
