𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐬 & 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐬- 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐞𝐞𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 In a recent podcast episode with Xavier Roussel and John Shegerian, I learned about Dole supporting the build of a local park. Many companies support parks through foundations and volunteer time as parks intersect with environmental justice, provide opportunities for physical and mental health, and green spaces support sustainability. But Dole’s involvement came from their frontline workers who felt empowered to bring their community’s needs to the corporation to organize a park project. The community benefits, the workers have a sense of pride and purpose, and it’s good for business. Another example was setting up an advisory help line for employees to overcome local red tape for administrative tasks. So what we if we took this to the next level? What if we actively empowered all employees to be changemakers in their communities? This would start by learning about community leadership, which is different from corporate leadership. It focuses on uncovering root causes, facilitating networks of champions, supporting peer learning collaboratives, and sharing best practices in stories and data. This would teach employees about leading as a changemaker, someone who empowers others to lead, going beyond volunteer hours. These skills would transform how employees lead their work teams too. Empowering teams to experiment and evaluate on the ground, innovative, shared solutions. This would embed ESG within the business as every strategy would be informed by community values - instead of traditional corporate tools of marketing or education, communication would be built upon empowerment and co-creation. A similar program taught nurse frontline workers to lead change resulting in a 27% reduction in nurse turnover and 604% return on investment as on site initiatives solved real world problems, such as patient falls. Such collective change leadership programs could be effective in corporations to increase engagement and real world problem solving. I see this as the future of corporate collaboration. Employees would learn new community leadership skills, and experience the purpose, growth and meaning they are looking for at work. What collaborative projects is your company investing in? If you place a goldfish in a garden it isn't going to thrive. And you wouldn't expect it to. So why is it that in some workplace environments and cultures, employees are left feeling unseen, unheard and unvalued, and yet they're still expected to be highly motivated, engaged and productive? People, just like goldfish, need to right environment to thrive. When a goldfish in a garden doesn't thrive, we don't blame the goldfish, we 'get' that the environment wasn't right. When a person doesn't thrive, they're typically labelled as 'difficult', or worse, and no one ever considers what could have done differently to create a more thrive-inducing or mattering-reinforcing environment. Yep, fish and people both need healthy environments to be at their best. As humans we all need to feel seen, heard and valued, and to add value. Mattering is a basic human need. As a leader you have such a beautiful opportunity to help your people thrive, through the environment you foster. What are you fostering? We’ve all heard that ‘Culture eats strategy for breakfast,’ a truth that becomes vividly clear within the fertile grounds of a company’s culture. Like a garden, culture requires nurturing to truly thrive. In the most successful companies, leaders are the master gardeners who don’t just preach values; they embody them. Authenticity is the soil in which a robust company culture grows, and living our values is the sunshine that nurtures it. Reflecting on a personal experience, I had the privilege of working with such a Leader who deeply understood our company’s garden. She didn’t merely plant the seeds of our values; she was in the trenches with us, nurturing every sprout. Her commitment to our growth was clear as she weeded out barriers and showered us with encouragement, fostering a garden of vibrant diversity and organic collaboration.
