Asking important questions with Victor Brierley - which will inevitably drive Scotland forward financially in tourism and overall revenue. Why isn’t there a minister for tourism in the whisky industry in Scotland? With an individual and a focussed supporting team behind them, there would be a significant shift in focus on our wonderful whisky industry. In 2022, tourism at Scotch whisky distilleries in Scotland brought in over £85 million in visitor spending, marking a return to nearly pre-pandemic levels. This followed a significant increase in visitor numbers as restrictions lifted, with over two million people visiting distilleries across the country. These sites have now become one of Scotland’s most popular attractions, appealing especially to international visitors from the U.S., Germany, and France, alongside a strong domestic visitor base from the UK. The Scotch whisky industry has invested over £300 million over the past decade to enhance tourism offerings, which has helped boost both local economies and employment. Tourism remains an essential part of the Scotch whisky industry’s economic impact, with distilleries drawing substantial revenue and providing employment across rural Scotland. However, sustainability remains a focus as the industry aims to maintain this growth amid economic challenges. Tourism and Hospitality Minister Matt Doocey has announced investment in a suite of new surveys and research which will help fill critical gaps in tourism and hospitality sector data. “Government investment totalling around NZD $3 million will fund essential research including a domestic visitor survey, tourism sentiment survey, new research into tourism volumes and flows, and insights into hospitality and restaurant spending,” Doocey said. “This Government is focused on growing the economy and boosting the value of exports. It was great to join a group of industry leaders from the hospitality sector today in a forum with Minister of Tourism and Hospitality, Louise Upston. Our discussions focused on getting New Zealand’s visitor economy (tourism and hospitality) back on track and reinforcing its role as a key driver of GDP. It was reassuring to hear the Minister’s strong support for the industry, backed by plans for a 90-day plan to accelerate inbound visitation. Having the right policies, framework and inter-government department support in place will be crucial to driving growth, increasing visitor numbers, and strengthening the sector’s long-term resilience. More visitors to Aotearoa mean increased job opportunities for everyday Kiwis across a wide range of direct and indirect industries, a stronger return from IVL and GST, and more resources for the government to reinvest in communities, support Regional Tourism Organisations, fund Tourism New Zealand marketing, and back major events.
