Case study: From student intern to OECD official How do you go from intern to fully employed in international relations? It’s not an easy path. Let’s look at an example of someone who recently managed it: Ivan Babiy joined my office as an intern in April 2022. He did a great job and our office wanted to extend his internship. However, cost of living in Paris exceeds the internship stipend (at the time it was EUR 768/month, and is now EUR 1000/month). So Ivan declined the extension offer and returned to Italy to finish his Master’s thesis. He stayed in touch with OECD contacts from his internship and found a temporary position in a different office. It paid more than being an intern, but much less than an “official” position. He also faced the costs and stress of having to find housing in Paris all over again – a big challenge. After months of hard work to prove himself in the new position and advocating for his value, Ivan was able to secure an “official” position. He’s enjoying the work and lifestyle and optimistic about his career. Barriers Ivan faced: --Attended public university that is not as well-known outside of Italy. --Financial constraints. He could not afford to be unpaid or paid below the cost of living for an extended period. When he ran out of money, he had to go home. However, as an EU citizen he did not face visa issues. --Initially, Ivan had a limited personal/professional network in Paris. It takes time and money to establish yourself, network, learn about opportunities, go through long hiring processes, etc. Ivan focused on building a strong network as quickly as possible. --Contract negotiations to secure a position: when offered the extension of the internship, Ivan knew his value and would not agree to an internship salary. He pursued other positions in the organisation that would value his skills. Factors in his success: --Initially Ivan had a hard time finding an internship due to lack of experience. During the pandemic, he started volunteering in Italy and online for global affairs associations that interested him. The skills and experiences from volunteering helped him get an internship at the Italian Embassy in Kyiv, and then that made his profile competitive for the OECD internship. --Ivan started networking early to understand how other young professionals in the OECD found their positions. He learned from the inside about the human resources processes and what kind of positions he could reasonably compete for, and he created an extensive work network. --Ivan did not give up. Even when he had to leave Paris, he maintained a positive attitude and continued to search for a position. His belief in himself helped him stay focused on his goals during difficult moments. Message from Ivan: “Know your worth and be able to explain it. And you must build your network! It is the source of advice, support and opportunities."

Who wants to do an internship with me? I'm looking for a bright student, with strong analytical skills, who understands the stakes for different groups and levels of governance, who is interested in geopolitics and regions, and who knows how to write text that people want to read. -No need to be a political science or a European studies expert -Often interns had a Masters degree, but I have sometimes had brilliant people here who had a Bachelor. -It's necessary to be willing to absorb a lot of new information and read a lot -You'll have to unlearn probably as much as to learn Also: I'm not looking for super innovative fancy CV or cover letters: simple, clear, to the point, well-written. Cover letters are a formal exercise, they say also something about how you're able to navigate a formal world.
