When former Prime Minister Jim Callaghan discussed the political climate before the 1979 General Election, he predicted a significant shift favoring Margaret Thatcher. He was correct, with Labour losing and spending the next 18 years in opposition. Danyal Usman argues that 45 years later, we are witnessing another sea change in politics. Despite the disastrous campaign he ran, there was nothing Rishi Sunak could have said or done to change the election's outcome. The British people punished 14 years of perceived incompetence, handing the Conservatives their worst election result ever. Usman identifies three key issues—Tax, Immigration, and Europe, dubbed the 'Tebbit trinity'—that condemned the Tories to opposition. A friend suggested that I create a statement of strategic intent for an Independence party , (any independence party ) So here goes 1. We will be honest , even when it’s painful or not in our best interests. ( it’s remarkably uncommon in politics ) We will constantly reinforce this message with all our citizens. We are committed to independence. Always have been, always will be. 2. That commitment to independence means this : We feel that in the long term we will be better off by being an independent nation. We accept that pleasure is a long way off and that there could be much pain on the way to achieving it . People of faith will understand that principle. 3. We don’t have many of the answers on the degree or timing of that pain . You have to have faith in us, and help us work through it. 4. We will prove that you can trust us by how we collaborate with the rest of the U.K. in achieving the very best outcomes for each and every one of you whilst we govern on our limited devolved powers. 5 We will use our powers of persuasion, will, and reason to negotiate a further referendum 6. Until then we will run our country well , we will not change the essence of what we are, until we have that vote from our citizens to embark on the changes that an independent Scotland will stand for. Further we will not blame others for inevitable failures , or errors of judgement along the way. We accept responsibility for failure and success 7 We will set clear objectives around the things that matter Welfare Housing Policing Transport Employment Health Economy Maximising the value of the countries key industries. Reducing our carbon footprint in line with , not in advance of global average positions. These matters are our focus . Vanity projects outwith this will not be entered into until we have a mandate for independence. 8. We will encourage all our citizens to vote. 9. Until in excess of 50% of those registered to vote have expressed their clear desire for independence by registering that vote, we will keep working to honour the above commitments. 10 We are committed to focus on delivering the HIGHEST IMPACT solutions for all Scots to have the best lives possible, whilst working with others in the most positive way possible to achieve this. We are responsible SOLELY for the achievement of BEST OUTCOMES on our journey towards our key objective which is that : Our citizens express their ULTIMATE CONVICTION in our party and they do that by voting for SELF DETERMINATION. A New Dawn Whatever your politics, the UK is waking up to a new government and a new Prime Minister in Keir Starmer. The historically unprecedented collapse of the Conservative vote and decamation of the SNP - coupled with the rise of Reform and strong performances by many independents - have heralded in a very solid Labour majority, after a successful Ming vase campaign by the new government, and the best Liberal Democrat performance since 1923. But make no mistake - the emerging results paint a picture of a British political, electoral and societal landscape more complex and muddled than at any point in my lifetime. And with the recent British Social Attitudes Survey showing staggering levels of political disengagement and many public institutions on their knees, there will be no scope whatsoever for triumphalism and much work to do for the incoming administration. Add to that the mismatch between votes cast and seats won - particularly for Reform and the Lib Dems - and we may see a renewed debate (at a minimum) about the FPTP electoral system. LinkedIn is not a place for politics and this is not a political post. But the election of a centre-left government in the UK - counter to many rightwards trends across Europe and elsewhere - is a noteworthy moment amid considerable flux and complexity here and around the world. #generalelection #politics #election #policy #government #leadership
