Hi, If you do fetal ultrasound you must have noticed some hypoechoic (black) areas in the placenta. We call these “placenta lakes” and they are physiological and small ones can be seen in most pregnancies. However, larger and complex ones can be pathological, we call those “echogenic cystic lesions“ or “lacunae” and can indicate underlying placental dysfunction, such as preeclampsia, fetal growth restriction of placenta accreta. Differentiating between the different types is important and cqn save lives.
