VP Sales & Marketing | I create global strategies that increase market share & product margin | Commercial Aerospace | Clean Energy | Sustainable Solutions | Cross-functional Sales Team Leadership
Interesting read from the folks at Aviation Week about the functionality of the Farnborough (and Paris) Airshows. While I have always been a fan of these events, the logistics have traditionally been a nightmare and costs have gotten out of control. Is it time to re-think the airshow? Does it need to be 5 days of commercial activity? My guess is people can do all they need to in 3 days or less. As the article states, there may not be a need for an International Airshow each year, but since Farnborough and Paris are competitors neither one is going to cede to the other. So what should be done? Is there one that is preferred over the other? Personally, I think it should be every other year and then alternating between Farnborough and Paris, (with the regional shows of Singapore and Dubai filling in the off years, so it would look like the following: - 2025 Paris - 2026 Singapore - 2027 Farnborough - 2028 Dubai As it stands right now there are 2 airshows per year which garner some level of international coverage. Seems like market saturation to me. Curious what other think. Post your thoughts below

Experienced Airline Leader. Airline and Aviation Consulting, Advisory Services. Future Thinking. Now Owner of Hospitality Business in UK North.
Attended Farnborough International Airshow yesterday and I was taken by the large presence that Qatar Airways and Turkish Airlines had: exhibition stands, chalets etc. Why would an airline use FIA to promote itself at an aerospace / technology show? Surely, airlines go to see what they can buy, not promote what they sell? I'd be interested if anyone from Qatar Airways or Turkish Airlines can offer any insight. On a broader note, I felt FIA 2024 felt a little muted this year. Not sure why but just didn't feel the buzz. Static and aerial displays were average and it just didn't feel as exciting as it normally does but that may just be me. Couple of things I would add (constructively) for the sake of Farnborough International: - Waymarking/signage was pretty poor. - Far too few seats where people could connect or meet - nearly auctioned off a picnic bench in the street food area as people were so desperate to grab it when I was vacating - Likewise far too few retail hospitality outlets that resulted in very long queues - Free WiFi. What WiFi? Coverage and accessibility was abysmal.
