Education is the cornerstone of progress and prosperity in any society. It serves as the catalyst for positive change, empowering individuals to reach their full potential and contribute meaningfully to the world around them. At its core, education is a powerful tool for breaking the cycle of poverty, inequality, and ignorance. By providing individuals with the knowledge, skills, and critical thinking abilities necessary to navigate an increasingly complex world, education becomes the driving force behind social and economic development. The benefits of education to society are multifaceted. A well-educated populace fosters innovation, entrepreneurship, and technological advancement, propelling societies forward into the future. Education also plays a vital role in promoting social cohesion and understanding, as it encourages empathy, tolerance, and respect for diverse perspectives. Furthermore, educated individuals are more likely to actively engage in civic life, contributing to a vibrant and informed democratic society. Moreover, education has a direct impact on public health outcomes, as educated individuals are better equipped to make informed decisions about their well-being and that of their communities. Additionally, education empowers individuals to participate in the labor market more effectively, leading to higher productivity and economic growth. Ultimately, the benefits of education extend far beyond individual achievement; they permeate every aspect of society. As such, investing in education is an investment in a brighter future for all. By prioritizing education and ensuring equal access to quality learning opportunities for all members of society, we pave the way for a more equitable, prosperous, and harmonious world. "Most Likely to Succeed" by Tony Wagner and Ted Dintersmith is a compelling exploration of the urgent need to transform education to prepare our youth for the innovation era. As I delved into its pages, I learned that today's youth are often discouraged from embracing their innate creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. Instead of encouraging innovation and risk-taking, traditional educational systems prioritize standardized testing and conformity, stifling students' natural curiosity and drive to create. Wagner and Dintersmith shed light on the reasons behind this phenomenon, such as the fear of failure, excessive focus on grades, and the pressure to conform to societal expectations. They argue that in order to thrive in the rapidly evolving landscape of the 21st century, young people must be equipped with essential skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and adaptability. Personally, I am deeply passionate about empowering youth to become innovators and daring creators. I believe that every young person has the potential to make a meaningful impact on the world, but they need the right support and encouragement to unleash their creativity and pursue their passions fearlessly. By fostering an educational environment that values experimentation, resilience, and out-of-the-box thinking, we can inspire a new generation of innovators who are not afraid to challenge the status quo and drive positive change. In essence, "Most Likely to Succeed" has reinforced my commitment to advocating for educational reform that prioritizes innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship. I am dedicated to working towards a future where every young person feels empowered to dream big, think creatively, and dare to create a better world for themselves and future generations.

The Long Term Impact team is excited to announce our investment in Hilight. Hilight is a social platform that empowers schools and districts to share and celebrate the work their teachers and other school staff are doing every day. The company allows school staff to recognize each other for being awesome in ways big and small. It also empowers administrators to surface things that are already working so that they can be shared more widely. The founders of Hilight are Claire Smith, a veteran educator who previously taught middle school math in Louisiana, and Krissy Taft, an accomplished software engineer. Research shows that the #1 indicator of student success is what is known as Collective Teacher Efficacy - when a team of teachers not only believes they can make a positive impact but also see evidence that they are making a positive impact. Hilight is strategically designed to boost Collective Teacher Efficacy so that students and teachers can both get the support they need now more than ever before. Daniel Jhin Yoo, Justin Su, and I believe that supporting our educators in this manner is a critical need. In the wake of Covid, school morale is at an all-time low. Teachers and other school staff feel more overwhelmed and underappreciated than ever. This has translated directly into higher teacher turnover in many schools throughout the country at a time when students, who themselves are struggling, need more support. Hilight combats this negative trend by providing school administrators with a critical tool for making their staff feel seen, valued, and connected. At Long Term Impact, we focus on supporting pre-seed founders who have built impactful products and are committed to building sustainable, high-impact businesses that contribute to a more equitable public school system. We believe strongly in the work that Claire and Krissy are doing, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to support them on their journey.

The schooling system is due for an update. Our current educational framework, rooted in the 1800s, tends to focus on specialized tasks and staying within predefined roles. This approach was designed for an era when many careers required individuals to act as parts of a larger corporate mechanism. However, with the advent of technology, automation, and sophisticated software, the landscape has drastically shifted. Many jobs that relied on component labor are now automated, and this trend is only growing. This shift explains why more people are gravitating towards entrepreneurial ventures. Yet, schools continue to prepare students for a world that no longer exists, emphasizing functionality over enterprise and innovation. In today's world, those who make the most significant impact are not just functional but essential. They drive change, capture attention, and execute ideas on a grand scale. These individuals are irreplaceable. It's time for our education system to evolve and nurture these vital qualities in our students. #innovation #entrepreneurship #schoolsystem
