Even though 16% of Black people reported having a mental illness, and 22.4% reported a serious mental illness over the past year . . . less than 2% of American Psychological Association members are Black, causing concern that mental health care practitioners are not culturally competent enough to treat their specific issues. In 2021, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) began focusing efforts on creating a pipeline designing to increase the number of Black and underrepresented behavioral health practitioners. During Black History Month, Belong Health will shine a light on how health disparities play a role in the health of Black Americans, and ways we can support the closing of the gaps.
